IU out west for road swing

Still glowing from a hard-fought 4-3 upset over No. 10 Tennessee, the Hoosiers get a change of venue for their next test.\nThis weekend, IU leaves the snowy confines of Bloomington for the sunny tennis courts of Arizona as they face underdog University of the Pacific and national powerhouse Arizona State.\nAdmittedly, the IU coaching staff knows very little about their first opponent, Pacific. But IU coach Lin Loring sees the match as a good experience, nevertheless.\n"In hindsight, going outdoors in February was probably a little bit of stupid scheduling on my part," Loring said. "Especially looking out the window today. The toughest thing for us will be the switch outdoors. It's a slower game; the wind and the sun are both factors. But I expect to go out and challenge in every match, just like last weekend."\nThe Hoosiers will use today as a practice day, then prepare for Pacific as a jump start to challenging the No. 19 Sun Devils.\nArizona State brings to the table the same combination of ranked players and power hitters that IU faced against Tennessee. But similar to their match against the Vols, IU looks to take control with their depth and consistency.\nThe key to knocking off Tennessee, the first of IU's 15 ranked opponents, was players winning at least one of their matches, with some girls winning two. \nLoring said team play, not individual accomplishments, was the difference and this weekend would require the same.\n"We've just had a couple really good team wins," Loring said. "Girls will lose a doubles match but respond with a big singles win. And vice-versa."\nSpecifically, sophomore Sarah Batty and senior Martina Grimm lost a close doubles match 9-7 before Batty responded in winning the decisive match in three sets.\n"We'll be a tough team to play if our girls win one or the other, with some winning both," Loring said.\nIU kicks off its first outdoor play of 2004 at 12 p.m. Saturday before tackling the Sun Devils on Sunday.
