Hoosiers win pair, lose thriller in sudden death

The No. 10 Hoosier women's water polo squad kicked off the post-season in Ann Arbor, Mich., Saturday afternoon looking to defend its CWPA Eastern Conference title. After knocking off Grove City and Gannon in impressive fashion, the Cream and Crimson fell to the No. 8 Wolverines of Michigan in a heartbreaker.

Chesnut sets records Four for four. IU senior Lauren Chesnut set a NCAA regional qualifying mark for the IU women's track and field team in the triple jump in all four meets of the outdoor track season. Chesnut's jump of 12.44 meters at the Nebraska Quadrangular was good for second place and is her second best jump in the outdoor season with four weeks to go until the Big Ten Championship.

Hoosiers come up empty

The IU rowing team got a pretty good taste for what the Big Ten championships might be like when it finished up its home regattas for the season this past Saturday. The Hoosiers played host to some strong Big Ten crews, including Iowa, Minnesota, No. 1 Ohio State and No. 13 Wisconsin at Lake Lemon, where sunny skies, warm weather and only a slight breeze highlighted the day's racing conditions.

Team gets shutout by Minnesota, defeats Iowa

On a weekend where the sun was out and temperatures reached into the 80's, the No. 56 Hoosiers (11-9, 5-3) started cold but heated up to salvage the weekend split and finish tied with Northwestern for third in the Big Ten. IU lost to Minnesota 7-0 but turned around and beat the Iowa Hawkeyes, 7-0.

Ford wins first career tournament; team finishes 2nd

The IU women's golf team traveled to the Lady Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette Saturday and Sunday to play against a majority of its conference opponents, whom it will face again this weekend at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Sunday's final round was anything but easy for senior Danah Ford, who entered the day in the lead by nine shots.

MLBPA leader to give lecture

Today, IU welcomes back one of the most despised yet relied-upon figures in all of sports: IU's very own Donald Fehr. Fehr is the executive director and general counsel of the Major League Baseball Players Association, otherwise known as the players' union. Fehr, who graduated from IU in 1970 with a degree in political science, returns to Bloomington to discuss "Current Issues in Sports" during a lecture in the Whittenberger Auditorium in the Indiana Memorial Union.

Hoosiers split series with Iowa

After dropping two of three games to Iowa Friday and Saturday, the Hoosiers came out with the bats swinging as they evened up the conference series at two wins a piece Sunday. IU collected 22 hits en route to a 25-9 beating of the Hawkeyes. The 25 runs mark the second time the Hoosiers have scored more than 20 runs in a single game this year.

Artest faces possible suspension INDIANAPOLIS -- Ron Artest played a huge role in Indiana's dominating Game 1 win over Boston, but the Pacers might be without their star in Game 2. Artest is facing a possible suspension for briefly leaving the bench during a confrontation between teammate Jermaine O'Neal and Boston's Brandon Hunter and Ricky Davis.

Weightlifters converge on Bloomington

This weekend, IU has the distinction of hosting the Midwest Weightlifting Club's regional competition at the University Gym from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is one of the many tournaments the regional sports club sponsors. May 8, St. Joseph's will host another competition, similar to the one here in Bloomington, which is a team qualifier for athletes to earn a spot at this year's Summer Olympics in Athens. In all, over 150 weightlifters from 35 clubs and 80 colleges and universities in the U.S. will participate. The Snatch and the Clean and Jerk lifts will be used at the competition over the weekend. The competitors will participate in 15 different weight classes ranging from 48 kilograms (106 pounds) to 105 kilograms (231 pounds).

Team Pursuit last series event before running of Little 500

Broken records and America's most famous Little 500 team headlined Thursday night's Team Pursuit in a battle of the Independents versus the Greeks. The finals of what is the last Little 500 series event included what could be a preview of the front stretch come race weekend. Teter women held off pole sitter Kappa Kappa Gamma for the women's Team Pursuit title with a time of 8 minutes and 3.86 seconds -- breaking the record Teter set in their preliminary run of 8:04.75, which bettered Alpha Chi Omega's 1998 record of 8:05.38.

Season rolls on, honors roll in for Overton

As the men's golf team continues its stretch of five tournaments in five weekends this Saturday and Sunday at the Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio, its has many advantages going for it. The Hoosiers are coming off a fifth-place finish at the Boilermaker Invitational last weekend, their fourth consecutive top-five finish.

2nd place Hoosiers take on rivals

Coming off its most impressive road performance of the spring season, the IU women's tennis team (13-6, 5-1 Big Ten) looks to round out its four-game road stretch by adding two more tallies to the win column. The Hoosiers go back out on the road to face No. 37 Iowa Saturday before taking on the Golden Gophers of Minnesota Sunday morning.

Split team heads to Nebraska for meet

The men's track team will compete in two different meets this weekend. The bulk of the team will compete at Nebraska in a quadrangular meet, and IU distance runners with a shot at qualifying for the NCAA regional will travel to California to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays -- a traditional gathering place for top-flight distance competition.

IU swinging one more time

The IU women's golf team will travel to the Lady Boilermaker Invitational this weekend as it draws toward the end of the spring season. The tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette. Teams will play 36 holes Saturday and the final 18 Sunday. Nine of the 11 Big Ten schools will be participating at the tournament, as only Ohio State and Penn State will not make the trip.

Hoosiers begin quest for conference championship

After wrapping up a solid regular season two weeks ago in the Fluid Four Invitational, the IU women's water polo team is gearing up for another run at the Collegiate Water Polo Association conference championship and a trip back to the NCAA Final Four.

IU hits road in search of first conference victory

The Hoosiers (23-23, 0-6) have been looking to snap their five-game losing streak for almost a week now. When their game Tuesday against the Evansville Aces was canceled, they had to look ahead to this weekend to get the bad taste out of their mouths. IU starts another Big Ten road trip Friday when it travels to Madison to take on Wisconsin (23-19, 3-5).

McKinney resigns as Bloomington North coach BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Tom McKinney, who coached Bloomington North to the state's final single-class boys basketball championship, has resigned after 17 years as the Cougars' coach. McKinney's Bloomington North teams went 303-99, including the 1997 state championship and a finish as runner up in the 2000 Class 4A tournament.

When the No. 56 Hoosiers (10-8, 4-2) hit the courts this weekend, they'll be facing polar opposites, as they'll put their three-match winning streak on the line against Minnesota at noon Saturday and Iowa at noon Sunday.

Hoosiers attempt to find consistency, wins

With a full week to prepare for Iowa, the Hoosiers have been working hard to overcome their recent struggles in conference play. Since IU (19-12, 3-5) has begun Big Ten action, the team has been plagued by errors and stranding runners on base. This weekend, the Hoosiers will get a chance to redeem themselves when they meet the Iowa Hawkeyes (8-19, 1-7 Big Ten) for a three-game series.

Ready, set, go: 2nd Little Fifty takes off

When people think of Little 500 week, thoughts of bicycles zooming around a track with spectators cheering pop into minds. The famed race caps off a wild week here at IU. However, a 12.5-mile foot race is what kicks off all the weekend festivities.
