IUSA campaign season upon us again

Starting this week, we will be assaulted by candidates in the IU Student Association elections, which will be held later this spring. As a veteran observer of people running for office in student governments (this is my ninth year of collegiate experience), I am willing to bet that, like the last eight student government elections, people are going to run on unimportant issues, nonissues and issues about which they could not make a difference if they really wanted to.

Six arrested at Delts house

Six students were arrested Thursday at Delta Tau Delta fraternity, 1431 N. Jordan Ave., for alcohol-related offenses. Among those arrested was Delts President Matthew Laviolette, a junior.

Dorm rates to rise 4%

New students living on campus will likely pay a 4 percent increase in room expenses next year, according to a preliminary rate plan presented to the board of trustees Friday. Meal plan prices would not increase under the plan, which will be voted on by the board next month.

Football team names quarterback coach

Coach Cam Cameron found out 10 days ago that his star quarterback, junior Antwaan Randle El, will return for his senior season. Now, Cameron knows who Randle El's quarterback coach will be. Cameron announced several coaching changes Monday, and Gerald Carr's appointment to quarterbacks coach was one of them. Carr will coach the quarterbacks and coordinate the Hoosier passing attack.

Pacers need new plan of attack

The NBA season is nearing its halfway point, and the Indiana Pacers are barely staying afloat in the Eastern Conference. Heading into tonight's matchup against Atlanta, the defending conference champion Pacers have struggled to a 20-21 record, placing them only a half-game ahead of Cleveland for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.

Climate discovery troubles researchers

Scientists have encountered another speedbump along their way to understanding how the climate works and how it might change in the new century. Researchers have found a discrepancy in the way ocean water warms compared with the air just above it. In the last 20 years, water temperatures around the globe have risen faster than air temperatures.

Proposed subdivision concerns neighbors in historic area

A proposed subdivision on the northwest side of town has concerned some area residents. They object to developer Dick Meacham's proposal to build a 107-lot subdivision on 122 acres west of North Maple Grove Road. The subdivision would lie on the Maple Grove Rural Historic District, an area of 19th century farmsteads among the county's earliest settlement areas.

Mayor subsidizes heating bills for low-income families in city

Bush's inauguration lacks poetic essence

Brand to address college athletics

IU President Myles Brand will speak on "Academics First: Reform in Intercollegiate Athletics" today at the National Press Club in Washington. Brand's speech will be broadcast on National Public Radio and via the Internet at 1 p.m. It will be taped and aired on C-SPAN.
