How to be a great Dad

Father's Day is rapidly approaching and that has got me thinking. First, should I get my Dad a card commemorating what a great job I think he has done over the years or the doll with the beer belly that burps when you squeeze its head?

GLBT support group to hold meeting

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Student Support Services is sponsoring GenderTalk, a monthly support group offering confidential support to students, faculty and community members exploring the meaning of gender and the differences between gender and sex. GenderTalk will hold its first meeting of the semester at 6 p.m. tonight in Bryan Hall on the top floor of the Student Activities Tower in the Indiana Memorial Union.

Abortion not only choice

It was nine long steps from the car to the building. She rubbed her forehead, and her stomach churned as if something were trying to tell her not to open the car door. People circled the building. She counted twelve signs, but the number seemed to increase with each second. She shook her head and her boyfriend put the car in drive. Anna is four years old today. She has curly blonde hair and her eyes are the color of the ocean in the Caribbean. She loves to read and when it's sunny out she likes to eat popsicles on the porch. When it snows she makes snow angels until the yard is covered with them. She is beautiful. Every time I see her I wonder, what if? What if my friend had entered the building that day? What if she had an abortion? Anna's mother was a senior in high school when she found out she was pregnant. She had eight months until graduation. At the time those had seemed the longest eight months of her life, but if you asked her today she'd tell you they were nothing.

IUSA begins working for students again

World Cup captivates everywhere but here

Sports is about many things. It fulfills a need for competition, it teaches sportsmanship and it can build bridges between people. Every pickup game in any sport ever played contains a mixture of these elements. The World Cup has all the ingredients to make it the best sports competition in the world. The best players in sports represent the best soccer playing nations, making the competition stiff. The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) preaches fair play before the start of every game and the games always seem to have intriguing subplots and human elements.

Suspects lose right to jury trial

WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush approved the use of a special military tribunal Tuesday that could put accused terrorists on trial faster and in greater secrecy than an ordinary criminal court. The United States has not convened such a tribunal since World War II.

Religious discussion not 'safe'

I was pleased to learn the CommUNITY Education Program has been sponsoring discussions on religion and spirituality, such as the recent meeting Tuesday in Teter Quad. I hope people will continue talking. You can't sum up one religion or worldview in one hour or evening; any such discussion can only be a beginning. And it seems to be difficult to get such discussion to continue, especially informed discussion.

As a fifth-year senior, Rich Thomas has seen a lot of twists and turns in his golf career. Terrorist detainees face mistreatment

NEW YORK -- Some of the Middle Eastern men jailed in the terror investigation are complaining that they have been held in solitary confinement, stripped, blindfolded, roughed up and deprived of sleep. "I was treated worse than an animal," Yazeed Al-Salmi, a former housemate of one of the hijackers, said after he was released this month from the Metropolitan Correctional Center. Al-Salmi, a Saudi living in California, said he and others were stripped and videotaped.

Widow of Goshen factory shooting victim files claim

GOSHEN, Ind. -- The widow of a factory manager killed in a workplace shooting spree has filed a $2 million claim against the estate of the man who killed her husband. Michelle Oswald's husband, Greg, was shot by Robert Wissman Dec. 6, 2001, at Nu-Wood Decorative Millwork.

Senior sets goals, leads team

This is the last year for senior Erin Womble on the women's cross country team, and she doesn't want the disappointment the team experienced last year. Then, the Hoosiers were on the bubble of making it to the NCAA meet. This year, Womble said she looks to head to Greenville, South Carolina, site of this year's NCAA's. She looks past last year's frustration and sees a positive. "We were on the bubble and almost there. Now we think, 'What can we do?' Everyone was let down, and we don't want that feeling again," she said.
