Tough practices act as inspiration

Downstairs in Assembly Hall where the IU wrestling team practices, quotes fill the red and white walls. Meant for inspiration and motivation, one of them reads, "Unless You Have Prepared Yourself and Deserve to Emerge Victorious, Do Not Expect to Win or Be Disappointed When You Lose." Another quote on the wall spells out, "Work Develops Champions." They are especially relevant to this team, which battles through physically grinding practices and voluntary workouts to maintain their weight and endurance.

Indian lecture series begins today lecture series kicks off today

As a part of the Spring 2004 Lecture Series sponsored by the IU India Studies Program, a discussion of conflict resolution will be held at 6 p.m. today in Swain East 140. The lecture marks the beginning of the program's effort to bring important Indian issues to the IU community. Tim Callahan, assistant director of the India Studies Program, said the lecture series provides insight into world events.

Two parties announce candidacy for RHA elections

Bush plan would increase freshman loans

President George W. Bush's 2005 budget proposal, released Feb. 2, will initiate a new distribution plan for Federal Stafford Loans. If implemented, the proposal would raise the amount a college freshman can borrow from the federal student loan program from $2,625 to $3,000.

Full Frontal Comedy club to raise money for a charitable cause

Full Frontal Comedy, a student improv troupe, will donate the proceeds from tomorrow's show to Habitat for Humanity. The event will take place at 9 p.m. in the School of Fine Arts, Room 015. Tickets are $4 for the general public and $2 for Habitat for Humanity members.

Cockburn shares music, politics

Cockburn, a musician who stands up for his political beliefs through his music, came to play in Bloomington for a crowd of loyal fans Monday night. Meandering on the Buskirk-Chumley stage, Cockburn played for more than two-and-a-half hours to an enthusiastic community of fans.

Who's mad now?

Every now and then, a blood drive comes to campus and all I can do is sit, watch and remember the good old days when I could join in the fun. Nowadays, the American Red Cross won't touch my otherwise first-rate type O, because of the year I spent in England in the late 90s at the peak of the mad cow scare. They are now keen on making sure our blood supply doesn't get tainted. It's a reasonable precaution. It's too bad the American agricultural industry had not been so careful.

A lesson from the penguins

New York Times had an amusing story the other day about a cute pair of penguins in the Central Park Zoo. These penguins, Roy and Silo, have been together for six years. They are affectionate, caring, utterly devoted to each other -- and the happy parents of a healthy chick named Tango. The only anomalous part of this story is the fact that Roy and Silo are both males.

43 people killed as Iranian plane crashes in UAE

Projects for Jill's House underway
