Ragazzi offers arts, food in intimate atmosphere

Some people say the art on a person’s wall tells a lot about the character of that person. If this is true, then restaurant owner Tamyra d’Ippolito is eclectic, creative and unique. When d’Ippolito came to Bloomington from New York, she and her husband opened the quaint Italian restaurant Ragazzi Arte Cafe, 212 S. Rogers St., in November 2005. For d’Ippolito, Ragazzi has become not only a place to serve her favorite foods, including an iced lemon and chocolate cake, but a place to display and sell her favorite art. Nearly every inch of the restaurant’s walls are covered with the works of local artists, students and d’Ippolito’s friends.

Go to hell, NASCAR (and stay there)

That’s it. I am putting my foot down. If NASCAR is a sport, then driving your car should be considered an aerobic activity. Putting on your seat belt should be practiced as often as a jump shot, and changing your tire should be clocked like the 40-yard dash.

Art is nothing but meaningless crap!

As this week begins, I am hoping you will all be regaling each other with great stories of your April Fools’ Day pranks. With that in mind, I have my own to tell you. This past Sunday afternoon, I wrote a false Facebook message to my friend Whitney, in which I confessed my romantic feelings for her. I received a standard rejection reply of, “Well, there’s just a lot on my mind lately, so I can’t really devote much time to dating right now. But it isn’t anything wrong with you, it’s me.”

Money and stress

For many people, the greatest source of stress is money – or, rather, a lack of enough money to pay all the bills owed. In my private counseling office I see many people with financial problems: individuals, couples and families who tend to spend more than they make. I see serious arguments between couples on spending habits, which are often a result of family values. I see severe stress caused by an inability to pay off debt, often as a result of high-interest credit-card rates.

New look, numbering planned for Indiana license plates

Design plans for Indiana’s new license plates would center on a state flag theme and drop the decades-old numbering system that identifies the car’s home county. The public can begin voting Tuesday for its pick among four designs for the new standard license plate that would be given out to motorists next year. The new plates will replace those issued in 2003 that are green-blue pastel with a farm landscape.

Bush proposes cutting Perkins Loans for ’08 federal budget

President Bush proposed a new budget for 2008 that would limit the Federal Perkins Loan Program. The Bush administration proposed a restriction on the amount of money colleges can collect from students paying off Perkins Loans, while at the same time providing the federal government with the authority to demand that interest money from the loans goes directly to federal collection agencies. Congress has yet to approve this budget.

Helping in any way he can, Powers adjusts to role as tight end, mentor

Just one year ago, Blake Powers was preparing for another season as the starting quarterback for the IU football team, and Kellen Lewis was a name unknown by many Hoosier fans. Entering this year’s spring practices, the story has changed for both players. Lewis is now the starting quarterback, and Powers has switched over to play tight end for his senior season.

Seldom does a month go by without a high and mighty columnist in the Indiana Daily Student chastising the IU student community on the basis of apathy. I am guilty in this regard. Apathy on campus can be a serious problem, especially when it affects student voice. But IU student apathy is not as rampant as it might have been in the past. It is, after all, much easier (and much more controversial) to point out shortcomings than it is to praise accomplishments. Today the credit is due.

TEHRAN, Iran – About 200 Iranian youths threw rocks and firecrackers at the British Embassy on Sunday, as the British government said it was in direct contact with Iran over the capture of 15 British sailors and marines.
