Increase in IU international students mirrors national trend

The number of international students studying at U.S. universities is on the rise, and IU is no exception. Since fall 2005, IU has seen a 10 percent increase in foreign students, according to recent data from the International Student & Scholar Statistical Reports released by IU's Office of International Services.

University of Michigan pledges to end race, gender preference in middle of admissions process

The University of Michigan announced Wednesday it will comply with a new voter-approved ban on affirmative action and immediately stop considering race and gender in admissions. The move came in the middle of the admissions process for next fall's freshman class. The university has already begun sending out acceptance and rejection letters.

U.S. House passes minimum wage increase

WASHINGTON -- The Democratic-controlled House voted Wednesday to increase the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour, bringing America's lowest-paid workers a crucial step closer to their first raise in a decade. The vote was 315-116, with more than 80 Republicans joining Democrats to pass the bill.

55 leave Friday for civil rights trip

For the fourth year in a row, students, faculty and staff will take a bus tour dubbed the "Civil Rights Immersion Trip" from Jan. 12 through 14 to Birmingham, Ala. They are scheduled to visit civil rights landmarks, such as the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Kelly Ingram Park and the 16th St. Baptist Church.

Council opposes outsourcing

The Monroe County Council unanimously opposed IU's proposed outsourcing plan in a letter to University officials Tuesday. The letter, which was signed by all seven members of the Council, outlined their resistance to why the University should reconsider plans to contract some services including the IU Motor Pool and IU Bookstore.

Purdue unable to engineer victory

If there was one change from the first half to the second in IU's 85-58 victory over Purdue Wednesday night, it was IU's growing lead. It started at 12, thanks to IU's stifling defense, which held the Boilermakers to just 22 points in the first half.

Livin' the Dream part of MLK events

The Eigenmann Residence Center will host a series of programs called "Livin' the Dream" to commemorate the birthday and accomplishments of civil-rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. The festivities, which started Sunday and run through Monday, Jan. 15, are part of the celebration dubbed "Power of One: Making the Committee, Meeting the Challenge," according to the IU MLK Committee Web site.

Ratliff leads Hoosier bench, tallies 16 points with cast on left wrist

IU junior A.J. Ratliff played Wednesday night's game against Purdue with a cast on his left wrist. But that didn't stop the guard from coming off the Hoosiers' bench and pouring in 16 points, including a 4-for-4 tab from beyond the arc and a perfect 6-for-6 from the field. Ratliff and the rest of the IU reserves combined for 46 points during the Hoosiers' 85-58 victory against Purdue. "It feels good," Ratliff said of his performance. "I did a lot of shooting this week, a lot of shooting when I was out with that injury. The ball felt good coming out of my hands and my teammates were getting it to me when I was open."

Free clinic for uninsured to open in April

While the government doesn't provide free health care for the 46 million Americans without health insurance, a small group in Bloomington is doing what it can. The Volunteers in Medicine clinic will be opening on April 23, four months earlier than planned. Mary Roberts Henderson, public relations chairperson and member of the organizing committee, said there were two reasons for this: the number of volunteers signing up, and the large amount of money donated.
