A Turkish Airlines plane carrying 135 people slammed into a muddy field while attempting to land at Amsterdam's main airport in misty weather today. Nine people were killed and more than 50 were injured, many seriously, officials said.

IU nixes Wildermuth name change

The name of a man who broke down racial barriers will not be juxtaposed with a segregationist’s, IU officials said Tuesday. IU’s board of trustees voted Friday to rename the Ora L. Wildermuth Intramural Center the William L. Garrett-Ora L. Wildermuth Intramural Center.

Gay is not the new black

When the cover of the national gay magazine The Advocate declared in November that “Gay is the New Black,” countless people of color – many of them GLBT – decried the statement as offensive, if not downright racist. It was nearly impossible, as a politically engaged GLBT person, to miss the outrage expressed on blogs and in media across the country.

Gen. Peter Pace is entitled to his beliefs, so long as he expresses them as private beliefs. He loses that right when he expresses them as part of an organization whose beliefs are broader. I did not see the article; I do not know in what context he uttered them.

Changing grassroots

Activists stood side by side with “Obama” painted across their chests. An older man proclaimed that when it came to Barack Obama’s campaign, “this is different.” Pictures of campaigners standing next to visiting politicians were intercut with Joe Biden talking about how “this may be the last chance to reclaim the America we love.”

4 U.S. soldiers wounded in attack by Iraqi police

Two policemen opened fire on U.S. troops visiting an Iraqi police station in the northern city of Mosul on Tuesday, killing an interpreter and wounding four American soldiers, officials said.
