Iran officially has everyone terrified.
Last week, the United Nations announced that Iran has more than a ton of enriched uranium. That much uranium, with some added purification, could make Washington’s worst nightmares come true.
With its current amount of uranium, Iran now has the ability to make an atomic bomb. Originally, Iran understated its sum of this low-enriched element by 460 pounds.
That’s understandable, though – forgetting about nearly 500 pounds of uranium. Things like that happen every day.
This announcement has everyone running around like chickens with their heads cut off; it’s reasonably easy to see why they are. It’s really frightening that there could be an atomic attack in the future – but is anyone really surprised?
I know I felt uneasy when we originally found out Iran was enriching uranium. I mean, we’re not held in the highest regard in the Middle East. So with Iran now in the mix, it is like another kid on the block is getting ready for a fight.
Our only problem now is that kid has gotten pretty big and scary.
But in saying all of that, did anyone believe Iran wouldn’t make enough uranium for an atomic bomb? I know I thought they would. Originally, though, I didn’t think they were going to enrich uranium for the sole purpose of making atomic weapons. I just knew that once they got going, they would decide to enrich more and more.
Everyone seems so caught off-guard that this is happening. When I think about our current situation, I reflect back on my childhood.
My mom used to read me a book called “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” And if my memory doesn’t fail me, this is same sort of situation. Iran got the green light to enrich uranium and ran with it.
And why wouldn’t they? The United States has atomic weapons that can be used at our discretion. Iranians have seen what’s going on in Iraq. They don’t want to be caught with their pants down if the mess spills into their country.
And on that note, of course Iran understated how much uranium they had. Why would they tell us such sensitive information when we have the ability to turn their country into a desolate, atomic desert?
The bigwigs in Washington need to stop being surprised and start acting. There is no denying this is one delicate state of affairs. It’s a situation that is definitely going to need a little finesse. But how we should go about it, I haven’t the slightest idea.
Who knows what’s going to happen in the upcoming months with Iran? All I do know is we need to make peace, and quickly. America needs to learn that having the bigger stick isn’t going to work anymore.
This situation comes as no surprise to me. What will be a surprise is how America decides to act upon it – that is, once everyone has their heads put back on.
Iran has a lot of Uranium ... Surprised?
