DiNardo named 25th football coach

Former San Diego Chargers head coach Mike Riley, former LSU head coach Gerry DiNardo and South Florida's Jim Leavitt all have one thing in common: they were rumored to be up for the head coaching position for the IU football team. But Athletics Director Michael McNeely saw something in DiNardo that he didn't see in the others mentioned -- the will to win. Maybe McNeely noticed it while they were both on staff with Colorado in the mid-90s. Maybe it was during DiNardo's tenure at LSU where he lead the Tigers to a 29-9-1 record and three bowl wins. Or it could have been during the month long search to replace the fired Cam Cameron. Or maybe it could have been his brief stint as head coach of the XFL's Birmingham Thunderbolts. Or maybe not.

Israeli troops enter Ramallah

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Israeli tanks and troops charged into Ramallah before sunrise Monday, surrounding the compound of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and arresting 20 suspected militants in searches throughout the city.

Knight counters Brand, waives rights

Former basketball coach Bob Knight countered statements by IU President Myles Brand and waived confidentiality rights to his IU employment records in an affidavit expected to be filed today, the lawyer for plaintiffs in an open records lawsuit against the University said Tuesday. The affidavit could prove beneficial for the plaintiffs in two lawsuits related to Knight's termination.

Get ready to down some energy bars or at least drink a bunch of coffee in preparation for BloomingtonFest 2001. This year's fourth annual alternative arts and music festival incorporates six venues and more than sixty bands into one weekend. But, it doesn't end there. Throw in two different art exhibits, one film festival and one afternoon game of kickball in the park, and the weekend is set. Steve Duginske put together the first BloomingtonFest four years ago, and since that time, it has grown into an event that includes more than music and more than one person behind the wheel.

Students debate study abroad

Since the seventh grade, junior Heli Reiner has been waiting for her chance to study abroad. She began planning to study in Granada, Spain, last semester, but because of the recent terrorist attacks, Reiner's planning has come to an abrupt halt. She now must decide by Nov. 15 whether she feels safe enough to go abroad.

Hacker hits music school

A computer security breach in the School of Music gave hackers the opportunity to access more than 1,700 individuals' Social Security numbers, including nearly 150 IU students, University officials said Monday. The breach occurred on two School of Music Web servers which contained personal information voluntarily submitted by individuals requesting more information about the school.

Cutters, Delta Gamma avoid wrecks, claim victories in final series event

Most Little 500 teams participate in Team Pursuit -- the final event of the pre-race series -- to get themselves in the right mind-set for the actual race. But Saturday's event hurt some teams more than it helped. Several serious wrecks slowed the event despite limits that allowed only two teams on the track at a time. Two riders broke their collarbones, and one separated a shoulder.

Stop spending!

Since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, government resources have appropriately increased to provide for the defense of the nation. Those attacks, though, should not be used as excuses for careless blank-check spending across the board. President Bush's recent 2003 fiscal year budget proposal contains several fine examples of wasteful spending. In the budget proposal, Bush wants to triple aid to Peru to fight the drug war -- bringing that effort to a price tag of $195 million. According to a recent article in The Washington Times, he also admonished a $5.5 million debt to encourage Peru to "protect biodiversity and tropical forests."

Purdue student gets life sentence

LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- With the victims' South Korean parents watching, a former Purdue University graduate student was sentenced to life in prison without parole Friday for murdering two sisters on campus.

Buskirk-Chumley to open for public viewing

Few, if any, Bloomington residents have seen the backstage area of the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre -- unless they've performed in a community production or logged hours moving and painting sets. But this weekend, IU Musical Arts Center manager and longtime Buskirk enthusiast Ted Jones will open the theater in its entirety to the public.

Fires ravage Colorado

FLORISSANT, Colo. -- With the largest wildfire in Colorado's history blazing outside Denver, firefighters moved into position ahead of the flames Wednesday to try to block its path toward the city's southwestern suburbs. The wind-driven blaze was moving slowly to the northeast and had gotten to within about 35 miles of Denver. The fire, which covered about 136 square miles or 87,000 acres, had destroyed 21 homes and threatened 2,500.

Revoking aid the wrong idea

For many, college is a time to find oneself. Try new things, meet new people and learn about things that high school would never even get into. And for many, part of trying new things means experimenting with drugs. Most think all that can come from this is loss of control and perhaps a decline of health. What they don't realize, though, is this experimentation can lead to the loss of financial aid as well.

Pom squads trying to raise money for nationals

Early last Friday, while other IU students slept or journeyed home from a long night at the bars, the IU pom squad was trying to keep a dream alive. Beginning at 3:30 a.m., the members of the pom squad woke up, got dressed up and drove to Indianapolis. They journeyed to city radio stations, took their places in front of the stations' front windows and went through the routines they usually perform at IU football and basketball games. They were trying to attract attention so they would be invited on morning radio shows.

Taking the initiative

It felt so surreal as I carried my stereo up four flights of stairs, sweat beginning to drip down my neck and intense humidity all around me. This was it. I was finally out of my hometown, and Iiving with someone I didn't know at all. I'd have to wait in line in the mornings to take a shower. I'd have to do my own laundry. I'd be in a class with more than 100 students. I'd have to learn to conquer my shyness and meet new people.
