SACRAMENTO - IU coach Mike Davis admitted it after the game Thursday night. Truth be told, he didn't have to wait that long to divulge his secret. It was obvious to his players that Davis was nervous before the Hoosiers took on Utah Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Arco Arena in Sacramento. "I was so tight it was unbelievable," Davis said with a laugh. "(junior Tom) Coverdale walked over to me today during the shoot around and said, 'Coach, just relax, we're going to win.' I was wound up so, so tight because this game, this game was so important for Indiana basketball, for me, for ourselves and for our team." With so much on the line, Davis was justifiably nervous. But after the Hoosiers whipped Utah, 75-56, Coverdale appeared to know what he was talking about heading into the game.

Egg hunt offers adults candy, prizes

The date of the Egg Scramble has been changed to Saturday, April 6 due to an overwhelming number of cancellations because of the IU men's basketball game. Registration has been extended to 5 p.m. Friday, April 5. In 30 seconds, it's over, but with the slew of prizes literally up for grabs, it is bound to be worth attending. The fourth annual Egg Scramble, sponsored by the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday at Bryan Park. The event is for adults over 21 only, and pre-registration is required by 5 p.m. today. Last year, the event was filled up with all 350 available spots, but this year there is still room left.

Most soundtracks these days load discs with songs by a few popular artists, throw in tracks by some obscure bands, sprinkle a few up-and-comers in the mix and hope the album will bring in the bucks.

Volleyball team earns first Big Ten win against Iowa

IU's loss to Minnesota's volleyball team Friday didn't stop them from beating Iowa Saturday night. The Hoosiers now stand at 4-9 in the season and 1-5 in the Big Ten. IU fell to Minnesota Friday in three games. With 15 kills, freshman Karla Crose led the Hoosiers, and sophomore Melissa Brewer helped out with 13 kills. Junior Laurie Gardner returned after recovering from a shoulder injury earlier in the week. Even with the help of Gardner being back and the skills of Crose and Brewer, IU managed to have 29 hitting errors on their side.

My mother and I compete each March to choose the national basketball champion. She's retired, which means she can park in front of the television and watch teams I have little interest in watching. Utah, Loyola Marymount, Alabama-Birmingham -- she's always good at picking a dark horse like Gonzaga or Siena. I skew my picks to place IU as close to the Final Four as possible, which means in the past few years I've done miserably against her. Hardheaded and clear-eyed, she saw the charts through probability and not romance. She didn't like those popping veins on Bobby Knight's neck, the chair incident in Puerto Rico -- to her, anyone so out of control could never win a title except through exceptional talent and some luck.

I was born and raised in Indiana and now live in North Carolina. I read the paper online almost every day and usually enjoy it. Until I read Duncan Teater's piece on Bob Knight ("Knight should learn from other generals" March 19).

Cameron fired

IU football coach Cam Cameron was dismissed from his position as coach this morning, IU athletics director Michael McNeely announced. McNeely said he made his decision in the last 24 hours and met with IU President Myles Brand this morning. He said Brand accepted his recommendation. McNeely said that he then met with Cameron and told him of his decision. He said that the University will name a new coach within a month and that he will head a search-and-screen committee.

Hoosiers slip on national television

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Before the football team headed to Wolfpack territory, coach Cam Cameron and his players promised a "statement" would be made. But before a sold out crowd of 51,500 Thursday at North Carolina State, the statement of an "improved team" was instead replaced by painful plays that bore strong resemblance to last season.

Alpha Phi Alpha step show, initiation open to public

Indiana clergy to rally for equal treatment for gays

Members of the Interfaith Coalition on Nondiscrimination plan to rally in the Statehouse to support legislation that will prohibit discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in the workplace. At 12:30 p.m. today in the north atrium, ICON will unveil a letter signed by more than 150 clergymen and women who believe that discrimination in any form is wrong.

Honegger to be released from jail after 1 month

Former women's basketball player Rachael Honegger has been sitting in a jail cell for the past month. The 23-year-old senior, a former starting forward, will see daylight today. She had been in custody pending a court date on a charge of violating the terms of her house arrest.

New parking facility opens downtown

It's now a little easier to find a parking space downtown. After a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week, the six-story Walnut Center parking garage opened for business. The $5.6 million facility, which contains 385 metered and leased spaces and will feature retail stores on the first floor, is on the northeast corner of Walnut and Seventh streets. Parking is available through the Walnut Street entrance.

All about defense

This game was probably more to the liking of Coach Mike Davis than last Saturday's blowout win against No. 12 Illinois. More defense and less talk about shooting. A smothering defense and a balanced offense led by Jared Jeffries was the story for the Hoosiers as they coasted to a 66-52 win against in-state rival Purdue before 17,456 fans at Assembly Hall. Jeffries finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Tom Coverdale had nine and Kyle Hornsby and A.J. Moye each had six.
