Hoosiers lose in first round of Big Tens

The IU field hockey team went into the 2001 Big Ten Tournament with hopes of pulling an upset of No. 2 seed Ohio State, but the Buckeyes jumped on the freshmen and sophomore laden Hoosier squad with a goal less than five minutes into the match.

Plastic surgery perplexities

For over three years now I have been considering breast implants. Yes, I have seen the "True Life" on MTV about the girl who got them and they were two different sizes. I have listened to the words of plastic surgery professionals who all promise that the pain is often worse than birthing a child. I have read the tales of terror about silicone leaking to parts of the body far away from the preferred chest location. One Web site, http://www.breast-implant-risks.com, details risks associated with breast implants -- just a small piece of the plethora of information on the Internet that should deter people in search of silicone alteration.

Exhibit explores silliness of sex

Friday evening, the School of Fine Arts Gallery opened its doors to a new exhibit. The crowd that had gathered outside moved past the wine and fruit tables and into the gallery. A low rumble began and soon grew into audible laughter.

Indiana Senators vote against energy conservation bill

The U.S. Senate has been debating the future of energy policy in this country. Unfortunately, it has not yet seized this opportunity to reject outdated policies and put us on the path toward a 21st century energy policy. It's disappointing that Senators Richard Lugar and Evan Bayh voted against increased automobile miles per gallon standards -- the only guaranteed oil savings in the Senate energy bill.

The wrong way to peace

Because most of the media coverage has been focused on the terrorist attacks, many Americans have not noticed that the situation in the Middle East has gotten progressively worse since the events of Sept. 11. The number of killings have risen on both the Palestinian side and the Israeli side, and no one outside the region seems to notice. Now, members of the cabinet on both sides seem to be the targets of attacks. Israeli cabinet member Rechavam Zeevi was shot in the head and the neck Wednesday, in an attempt to end a cease-fire between the Israelis and Palestinians, CNN reports.

Women's recruitment wraps up

Sporting boots with formal dresses, masses of shivering women braved the sudden blast of winter weather this weekend to participate in the final rounds of women's formal rush. Over 1,000 IU students took part in the Panhellenic Association's formal recruitment program this year, which culminated yesterday with three-party.

Yeagley gets 500th victory

Defensive changes help Hoosiers

Cam Cameron waited until Wednesday to implement a handful of defensive changes for Saturday's match-up with defending Big Ten champion Northwestern. His late change of heart proved to be perfect timing. Perfect as in two interceptions, two fumbles and IU's second win -- a 56-21 thumping of the Wildcats -- of the season in front of 26,213 at Memorial Stadium.

Balloon launch hurts environment

The opening ceremonies for the men's Little 500 race included fanfare, guest speakers, a color guard, a capella singing, an invocation and the introduction of the 33 teams. Amid the excitement of these events, the competitive spirit in the air and support from the crowd, the traditional balloon launch was only a brief and minimal part of the celebration. While the balloons were colorful and fun, they were an unnecessary and environmentally unfriendly gesture that easily could have been left out of the ceremony.

Former Liberian president speaks

Former Liberian president Amos Sawyer spoke Monday in the Moot Courtroom in the law school on United States foreign policy in West Africa. NFL season picks and pans

Brand: Endowments a 'triumph'

Lauded as "a genuine triumph" by IU President Myles Brand, a seven-year, $504 million fund-raising campaign positions IU first among Big Ten public universities in endowed faculty positions. The campaign -- the largest in IU's history -- increased endowed faculty positions by 178 percent, and it left IU with 333 chairs, professorships and curatorships, also leading Big Ten public institutions.
