Video-tape dooms mom who beat baby

SOUTH BEND -- The woman caught on video beating her 4-year-old daughter in a department store parking lot will probably plead guilty eventually because no jury would find her innocent, her attorney said Monday. Madelyne Gorman Toogood, 25, was arraigned on a felony charge of battery to a child, and a magistrate entered an innocent plea on her behalf. Her attorney, Steven Rosen, said the innocent plea was just a formality.

3rd Hoosier dies from West Nile

INDIANAPOLIS -- A third Indiana resident has died from a probable West Nile virus infection, state health officials said Monday. The state Department of Health would identify the person only as someone older than 70 who was from northeastern Indiana's Allen County, spokeswoman Jennifer Dunlap said.

Runners ready to race aginst cancer on Saturday

The third annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer run/walk, a fundraiser for The Bloomington Hospital Olcott Center for Cancer Education, will be held Saturday on a course beginning at Memorial Stadium. The goal of the five-mile event is to raise $100,000 for the Olcott Center, whose mission is to provide support and education for those diagnosed with cancer and their families. Last year, HOC attracted 2,027 people and raised $75,000, making it the largest run-walk in Monroe County, according to a press release.

Arafat won't release names

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Yasser Arafat on Monday rejected Israel's demand that he provide a list of everyone holed up with him in his besieged office, a Palestinian negotiator said after meeting with Israeli officials in the first face-to-face contact in the five-day standoff. In the divided West Bank city of Hebron, one Israeli was killed and three others were wounded by Palestinian gunfire, settlers and the military said. The Palestinians fired at a Jerusalem family walking to the city's disputed holy site, the burial cave of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the military said.

IUSA unveils rules for Corvette raffle

Monday, Sept. 23,2002 8:20 p.m.

All registered IU students will be entered in a drawing for a $50,000 cream and crimson Corvette. Dean of Students Richard McKaig will administer the raffle via a computer-generated system. The IU Student Association held a press conference in Dunn Meadow today to display the sports car that has sparked much legal controversy in the last few weeks. IUSA President Bill Gray gave a prepared speech, unveiled the rules and answered questions concerning the legitimacy of the raffle that once allowed only eligible voters to enter, while excluding international students.

Behrman search comes to a halt

Monday, Sept. 23,2002 7:34 p.m.

The Salt Creek search for missing IU student Jill Behrman's body has ended due to Friday's severe weather. Storms Friday afternoon caused torrential rainfall in the watershed area near Salt Creek, weakening a dam that had been built in the search. Excess rain from Brown County and the surrounding areas flowed into the creek Friday and Saturday, putting pressure on the north dam.

Vehicle stop leads to bust

Board OKs mandatory dorm living

When he was a freshman, Patrick Mitchell chose to live off-campus at Brownstone Terrace apartments. A junior now, he said he has no regrets about missing dorm life his first year. "I think it was much better for me to live off campus," he said. "Academically, it kept me from being influenced by some of the negativities of the dorm. And I'm a pretty outgoing person, so I tend to meet a lot of people anyway."

Tornado cleanup begins

Ellettsville -- John and Linda Bybee were some of the lucky ones. A tornado ripped through their neighborhood Friday afternoon, destroying homes, uprooting trees and throwing debris everywhere. The Bybee home was for the most part intact after the storm rolled through, but many of their belongings weren't.

IUSA to unveil Corvette

The president of the IU Student Association will drive a $50,000 cream and crimson Corvette into Dunn Meadow today, unveiling the top prize in a university-wide raffle that once required students to vote in November's election. The sports car will be displayed in the southwest corner of Dunn Meadow, and will remain there until after the November election, said IUSA Vice President Judd Arnold. Security around the Corvette will include a fence, tarp and a security camera.

Hoosiers on a roll heading into Big Ten

The volleyball team took first place this weekend in the IU Credit Union tournament, beating Central Michigan and Butler and upsetting the No. 30 ranked Louisville Cardinals. IU extended their winning streak to five games heading into conference play Wednesday night against Ohio State. In the opener Friday night, Central Michigan took a 28-25 lead on a late 5-0 run. But, IU quashed the rally, as the Hoosiers scored the next four points en route to a 34-32 victory in game one.

Rain can't stop Hoosier runners from top finish

Severe weather tried unsuccessfully to ruin the afternoon for the Indiana Intercollegiates cross country meet Friday afternoon. Although tornado warnings highlighted the day for most of central Indiana, the story at the IU cross country course was the dominant effort put forth by the men's team. The team won both the team and individual titles.

IU shuts out Golden Gophers

The Hoosiers faced weird weather and feisty opponents this weekend but dealt with it skillfully and got off to a great start to the Big Ten season. IU (4-2-1, 1-0-1) beat Minnesota 1-0 in a game that had a rainy first half and a sunny second.
