Sax stylings leave much to the imagination

The Bloomington Area Arts Council celebrated the 10th Anniversary of its John Waldron Arts Center (JWAC) last week despite the third consecutive gloomy and rainy Friday. The rain's cool breezes were welcomed in the upper level of the JWAC as feature jazz ensemble "Ballin' The Jack" played to an enthused 50 person audience.

Reality bites into Bloomington

Junior Kimberli Owens is going through an introspective phase in her life -- she believes being one of the select seven to make it on "Real World" will help her through it. Her chocolate brown eyes sparkle beneath her trendy Target glasses as she explains that Saturday's "Real World"/"Road Rules" casting call was so important she skipped out on a mandatory RA meeting in Indianapolis. "I'm just trying to find my place in the world," Owens says, her giant smile revealing two dimples in her flawless brown skin. "I find that I learn more from interacting with people than from sitting in the classroom, so ("The Real World") would be an educational environment."

Prosecutor named in Wells case

Monroe County Circuit Court Judge E. Michael Hoff named Greene County prosecutor David Powell as special prosecutor in Monroe County Councilman Scott Wells' case Friday. Wells was arrested for driving under the influence, but he says he was set-up by political enemies. Powell's appointment is effective until Oct. 4, 2003. Powell, who was out of his office this weekend and could not be reached for comment, now has a year to decide whether or not to take action in the case.

Visitors to share stories of living in Middle East

What they have seen and experienced comes not from a satellite feed, CNN or a newspaper, but rather from outside their own window. Three Israeli graduate students will be visiting IU today and Tuesday to share their personal experiences about the conflict in the Middle East and how they live with a constant threat of terrorism. The "Israel at Heart" program, coordinated by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and their office of Academic Affairs in New York, sends the different groups of three students to various college campuses, high schools and other institutions around the United States to share their experiences of daily life in Israel under the current tense conditions.

Run for Jill raises $10,000

Runners and walkers from the campus and the Bloomington community gathered Saturday to remember missing IU student Jill Behrman and raise money for student scholarships and charity. About 1,500 people participated in the annual 5K Jill Behrman Run for the Endzone, which is organized by the Division of Recreational Sports. It is held in honor of Jill Behrman, who disappeared from Bloomington while riding her bike May 31, 2000.

Hoosiers enter second tournament of season

Starting today and continuing through to tomorrow afternoon, the IU women's golf team will attempt to win its second team tournament of the season when they compete in the Shootout at the Legends event at the Legends of Indiana Golf Club in Franklin. No. 11 Indiana is the top ranked team by Golfweek/Sagarin at this week's 12-team event.

Giants bigger than Braves

SAN FRANCISCO -- Livan Hernandez boasted about his postseason perfection, then went out and backed it up. Hernandez won again in October and the San Francisco Giants battered Tom Glavine for the second time to beat the Atlanta Braves 8-3 Sunday and even their NL division series at 2-2.

Hoosiers battle Michigan, MSU, fall in both matches

The women's volleyball team returned to Bloomington from Michigan after losing both matches this weekend to Michigan and Michigan State.

Big Ten teams top classic

The Big Ten took on the Big 12 this weekend at the Hoosier Classic tennis tournament. Big Ten teams, which consisted of IU, Ohio State and Iowa, compiled a dominating 54-26 record in competition against Big 12 foes Kansas, Kansas St. and Missouri.

Women's crew rows their way to first place

The women's rowing team kicked off their season by hosting the fifth annual Lemon Head Regatta Saturday. The day was highlighted by the Hoosiers' Novice 4 finishing in first place and the Varsity Eight taking third.

Overtime goal wins game

Streaks are meant to come to an end, but on Sunday afternoon, the IU men's soccer team was not quite ready to allow Michigan to break their winning streak in conference games. The No. 4 ranked Hoosiers were taken to the limit by the Wolverines, but they prevailed with a 2-1 overtime win to extend their Big Ten conference winning streak to 33.

Freshmen carry team in year's best finish

In its second to last tournament of the season, the IU men's golf team was seeking to eliminate what has been their demise all season long -- one high round. Even though the team did not quite accomplish the goal, they placed fourth at the Wolverine Invitational on Sunday, recording the team's best finish of the year.

Outdoor Appeal

A revised version of Spiderman is on the move. IU physician Brent Nielsen is negotiating the 40-foot climbing tower at Bradford Woods Outdoor Center during the second annual IU Outdoor Day 2002 held on Saturday. The free event was sponsored by Bradford Woods Outdoor Center, IU Outdoor Adventures, Outdoor Recreation and Resource Management Option and the Cline Foundation. Its purpose was not to raise money for the programs but to educate the community about their existence.

IU not invited to Plaboy's party

Music festival remembers Behrman

The legacy of Jill Behrman was remembered through both athletics and music Saturday. In conjunction with the Jill Behrman Run to the End Zone, a music festival was held at Dunn Meadow to raise money for Jill's House, a temporary home for cancer patients undergoing Proton Therapy at IU.
