Preparing for spring break requires careful planning

·

Spring break can be a time of forgetfulness of all things school related. But with careful planning and budgeting, it can be a trip to remember. It's important to include essentials when packing for spring break. Mia Martin, the branch manager of STA Travel on Kirkwood Avenue said students should pack more than their swimsuits and tanning lotion.

Castrating the tongue

·

For those of us not up on the P.C. beat, March is dedicated to women's history. This is essentially giving 31 days to 52 percent of the world's population. Its goal is to make people aware that history is not only made by dead white men.

"Star Trek" has died

·

Star Trek" has died. Last Saturday the cast and crew of "Enterprise," the latest spin-off of the original "Star Trek," filmed its last episode. Paramount Studios canceled the show after only four seasons because the ratings were horrible. The ratings were horrible because the writing was horrible. And the writing was horrible because people evidently just don't care anymore.

We don't need no mo' drama

·

If you've even picked up the Indiana Daily Student today, you probably haven't started your spring break yet. It might be a college tradition to go somewhere sunny in the middle of the semester, but the IU tradition involves basketball. Not remotely relaxing. You need to keep your focus on the game, even at the beach or at home.

Chancellor chats with students

·

IU-Bloomington Interim Chancellor Kenneth Gros Louis had some advice for his successor. He told a group of students in front of the fireplace in the South Lounge of the Indiana Memorial Union Wednesday that the next chancellor must first understand the climate and traditions of the Bloomington campus to be an effective administrator.

Secrets of the lost vault

·

With a state-of-the-art temperature control system, a security structure that rivals the Pentagon and stacks of books that would take several lifetimes to read, the Ruth Lilly Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF) is preserving and storing materials so current students and future generations will be able to use and appreciate the fine collections at IU.

Dean McKaig up for review

·

Dean McKaig has been down this road before. He's not worried -- it's part of his job description.

'Waging' war on poverty

·

Some people work 40 hours a week in Bloomington, but they cannot afford food, adequate clothing or shelter because their minimum wage job affords a lifestyle below the national poverty level.

Ryan 'n' Ryan weigh in on the rest of the country

·

I know the No. 2 Tar Heels should be the obvious pick here, but I like the No. 3 Demon Deacons' chances. Wake Forest will be without their star point guard Chris Paul today, while he serves his one game suspension for punching N.C. State's Julius Hodge in the groin Sunday.

Tourney begets tourney?

·

Let the madness begin. And while the Big Ten Tournament might lack the lure and tradition of the Big East and ACC Tournaments, there is still much to be decided in Chicago this weekend.

Conference celebrates 100th birthday

·

Everett Dean, say thank you. Mike Davis, say thank you, too. Branch McCracken, say thanks. Oh, and Bob Knight, you too. Say thank you to Amos Alonzo Stagg for bringing basketball to the Big Ten. The same Stagg who is better known for his excellence in football at the University of Chicago and started that school playing basketball in 1894 -- 11 years before the Big Ten conference began its basketball league.

Team ties for 4th at Hyatt Tournament

·

Golfers say players "drive for show and putt for dough." If that is the case, the No. 35 IU men's golf team came home to Bloomington with empty pockets after finishing fourth in the Hyatt Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament in Puerto Rico this week.

Even 'Saint Paul' is human

·

In the March 6 match up between No. 3 Wake Forest and N.C. State, plenty of shots were taken. Most were aimed at the basket with varying degrees of success. But the story of the game wasn't about a basketball shot.

No. 27 Hoosiers to cap off tough non conference season

·

A win in today's 3 p.m. match against No. 20 Texas Christian University would let the No. 27 Hoosiers do two things. It would send them walking out of the IU Varsity Tennis Center with their first win out of six matches against top-20 ranked opponents this spring. It also would be a good way to close out one of the hardest non conference schedules in the country.
