It’s one great week. No, it is not Little 500 week. It’s not Welcome week. It is not the week of Hanukkah or the first week of summer. It’s not even a full week. Rather, it is five great days, and it happens in a little place called Morgantown. This is the week of camp for all the people involved with Camp Kesem – a free, week-long camp for kids whose parents have or have had cancer. It is a week away from the difficulties at home, and it gives these kids a chance to be just that: kids.

Fearless joy

In the hustle-bustle competitive existence of academia, it’s vitally important to enjoy the simple things. Taking time to smell the roses isn’t just a kitschy cliche; it’s essential to a joyful existence. An impromptu coffee date with an old friend, a pre-class Runcible Spoon breakfast, a deep breath of crisp fall air. These are the things that keep me going in the midst of personal disasters and unbearable class stress. They remind me that things are honestly not that bad.

The students in the class for which I am a teaching assistant asked me a rather interesting question: Why is J.K. Rowling’s Dumbledore character gay? After an awkward explanation of the birds and the bees, we moved forward with more relevant inquiries to the world of public affairs, such as why Sen. Larry Craig is gay?

Black panther, black beer draw crowd to brewery

More than 150 people filled Upland Brewery’s small patio Saturday afternoon for the new release of their black lager beer, “Schwarz Bier,” and to help raise funds for the Exotic Feline Rescue Center. The festivities, which included four live bands and the black panther, began at 4 p.m.

IU drops 4th Big Ten game

The Hoosiers were dealt their worst defeat of the season, falling 33-3 at Wisconsin. The loss drops IU to 5-4, 2-4 on the year and puts its season-long goal of playing in a bowl game – once a seeming certainty – into serious jeopardy.

Calling for compassion

Thousands of students, community members, international visitors and monks flocked to Assembly Hall Saturday afternoon for a chance to hear the Dalai Lama deliver his final message to Bloomington. As the audience gave the Dalai Lama a standing ovation before he appeared, dozens of monks stood silent as they waited for their spiritual leader to walk on stage.

IU mens basketball picked to finish 2nd in Big Ten

The IU men’s basketball team was picked to finish second in the conference and senior forward D.J. White was a preseason All-Big Ten selection at the annual Big Ten Media Day in Chicago. Michigan State was picked to win the conference, and Ohio State was picked to finish third.

IU sororities kick off rush with 19 party

More than 1,600 potential new members visited IU’s 19 sororities Saturday and Sunday to complete the first phase of the formal recruitment process, and were greeted by cheers before entering each house.

Win gives IU at least share of Big Ten title

Sunday was a sad day for seniors Charley Traylor, Chris Munroe and Greg Stevning, as they played their last regular-season home match on Jerry Yeagley Field. But there was no time for sulking. With their 1-0 win over Penn State, the Hoosiers officially clinched at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title. This is the 12th time IU has been crowned regular season champions.

Men finish 4th, women 9th at cross country conference championships

The weather is getting cooler, which means postseason competition is finally here for the IU men’s and women’s cross country teams. Despite a temperature of 49 degrees at race time, the men finished a sizzling fourth this weekend at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio.

Intrasquad scrimmage begins season

Fans looking to catch an early glimpse of the No. 15-ranked IU wrestling team are going to have to take State Road 46 east out of Bloomington, cross the Brown County line and go straight at the stop light in Nashville, Ind., then head to Brown County High School.

IU womens soccer goes on the road, loses 2 Big Ten games

With two losses on the road this weekend, the IU women’s soccer team has dropped its last three Big Ten contests in what has been the only blemish in the team’s Big Ten season. Now, with a record of 12-4-2, 5-3-1 in Big Ten play, IU coach Mick Lyon said his team will likely receive a fourth or fifth seed in the Big Ten tournament.
