Longform

Aaron Bernstein

Students stop talking, start walking

·

The National Day of Silence at IU will be commemorated on campus today. The event, in which participants take a vow of silence for all or part of the day, is meant to bring attention to how people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transsexual often feel overlooked and silenced because they are different.

IU softball seeks second straight victory

·

With a road victory against Michigan State lingering on its shoulders, the IU softball team will host Louisville at 4 p.m. today at the IU Softball Field for an out-of-conference matchup.

Around the World

·

Authorities say a 69-year-old central Florida woman found an 8-foot-long alligator prowling in her kitchen late Monday night.

Juno

Another little comedy that could

·

Even casual fans of “Juno” would be wise to avoid the single-disc edition in favor of the double-disc special edition, primarily due to Reitman and scribe Diablo Cody’s feature commentary covering all the bases and divulging more juicy tidbits than one should ever want to know.

Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed

Win Ben Stein’s Intelligent Design

·

Putting “Bueller” behind him, Ben Stein attempts to skewer the theory of evolution. With a controversial issue like the question of existence, Stein argues that both evolution and intelligent design need to have a voice. In the film, however, his seems to be the only voice.

The Forbidden Kingdom

Kingdom's Kung-Fu is strong

·

“The Forbidden Kingdom,” a film built around the simple idea that people want to see Jackie Chan fight Jet-Li, is a great homage to old-school martial arts movies, but not much else. This movie does a fantastic job of knowing exactly what its audience expects and delivers on its promises of awesome fight scenes and a shallow propped-up story.

Asia: Phoenix

Asia minor

·

Asia, of "Heat of the Moment" fame, is back with all four original members. Prog rock, it turns out, has difficulty staying progressive after 25 years. The good news is that they sound just like they did in 1983. The bad news? They sound just like they did in 1983.

Everclear: The Vegas Years

Vegas jeers

·

Everclear seems to complete its unlikely transformation from mainstream sensation to punk-rock bar cover band on The Vegas Years a train wreck of 16 tracks that could only keep the attention of a middle-school student who thinks it's an influence on his rebellious phase against life.

Tantric: The End Begins

Tantric meditation

·

Hugo Ferreira has assembled a new team of musicians under the Tantric moniker, including the notable inclusion of a full-time electric violinist. There are a requisite number of sappy ballads, but Tantric comes through with a substantial, well-integrated album of balanced acoustic and distorted sounds.

Black Francis: Svn Fngrs

Seven fngrs but no soul

·

Frank Black wrote, recorded and mixed Svn Fngrs in six days, but unlike the story of creation in the Bible, the album is a little rough around the edges. When it peaks, it soars; but mostly the album falls flat.

Worth the price?

·

Few things affect us more than the loss of human life. For this reason, I can only imagine the kinds of emotions that must have often swirled through death-row chaplain Carroll Pickett’s head. This man often dealt with convicted murderers mere hours before they themselves were to die. On Dec. 6, 1989, Pickett explained every step of the execution process – including the number of steps it took to get to the execution chamber – to yet another prisoner. The prisoner’s name was Carlos De Luna.

Jack Bauer diplomacy

·

For thousands of years, the Middle East has been fairly consistently a region full of instability and conflict. Despite the efforts of many through the years, the religious and ethnic conflicts in the region have never been solved. However, that may be beginning to change, at least on one front.

I was going to eat that

·

"Food prices have risen 83 percent in the last three years.” That’s an estimate from the World Bank regarding inflation worldwide. Inflation is bad for everyone, but for households suffering from poverty – in 2001, the World Bank estimated 1.1 billion people lived on less than $1 a day, and 2.7 billion lived on less than $2 a day – a price increase of this magnitude is potentially fatal.
