Stop idolizing coaches

With the removal of the Joe Paterno statue from its pedestal outside Beaver Stadium Sunday morning, the tarnished legacy of the once-revered coach absorbed perhaps its final blow. But it’s not the pedestal that supported the statue we should be concerned with. We should be concerned with the pedestal Paterno The Man stood on.

Man hospitalized after robbery

Officers from the Bloomington Police Department were dispatched to IU Health Bloomington Hospital at about 1 a.m. Saturday after hospital staff reported a man had been hospitalized during a robbery.

IU professor’s art part of Summer Olympics exhibit

Edward Bernstein, head of the printmaking department at the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at IU, will have his artwork, titled “Illuminata,” on display at the Barbican Centre in London. The artwork will be a part of “The River Thames, the Great Wall of China — Embrace the World,” an international juried exhibition in honor of the Summer Olympics.

Not only is humor a way of mitigating the controversy and/or pain of a difficult subject (such as rape, death, 9/11, the Holocaust, etc.), it can illuminate how and why we feel a certain way about certain things, or highlight cultural prejudices and beliefs regarding a certain topic. That is what good humor does.
