Freshman wins chess championship

Marc Arnold is a year older than most of the IU class of 2016. He took a year off following high school in Manhattan, N.Y., to play chess. The training paid off at the 2012 U.S. Junior Closed Championship in July when Arnold won first place.

Local artist sketches with ballpoint pen

The exhibition, titled “Works from Life,” is a collection of figurative drawings and Bloomington landscapes Ratzlaff drew with ink or graphite or painted. His art lines the walls around the studio, as he is the only artist featured at the moment.

Man reports violent attack in woods

The Bloomington Police Department collected evidence after a homeless man was reportedly attacked in a wooded area near West Third Street and Cory Lane.

Contra group dances night away

The Bloomington Old-Time Music and Dance Group’s weekly contra dance session acted as preparation for the 34th Sugar Hill Dance Weekend, which is Friday and Saturday at the Ransburg Boy Scout Reservation.

MIT Technology Review list honors IU grad Soghoian

Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Technology Review magazine recently recognized IU Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research fellow Christopher Soghoian as a member of the 2012 TR35, a list that honors the world’s top 35 contributors to various technological fields who are younger than 35.
