When I was little, I used to wonder why Goldilocks did not thank the three bears for letting her steal some of their oatmeal: gray, gummy lumpiness? I would have gladly given up mine. It was not until my teenage years that I learned the pleasures of a good bowl of oatmeal. When made correctly, it is smooth, silky and soothing. Made with milk and a dash of cinnamon, then topped with brown sugar, dried cherries and nuts. These days I find myself cozying up to a big bowl on many mornings and admiring the wisdom of those bears.

Graduate students opt for separation

An idea conceived over two years ago is finally coming to reality for the Graduate and Professional Student Organization. A constitution, which is submitted for ratification by departments, will remove GPSO from the umbrella coverage of the IU Student Organization. The split would grant graduate and professional students independence from IUSA. Currently the GPSO is merely an advocacy group for graduate students because IUSA claims to represent them, and all students.

Afghans begin training army

KABUL, Afghanistan -- On Monday, a U.S. general began a mission to help Afghanistan establish a national army with fighters loyal to the central government instead of the tribal leaders or local warlords. The visit by Maj. Gen. Charles Campbell, chief of staff of the U.S. Central Command, is part of a plan to create a training program for the Afghan army, a military representative at the U.S. Embassy said.

FBI labels E.L.F. 'terrorists'

Terrorism in America may summon images of the U.S. being targeted by organizations overseas. But the FBI identifies a group with active members in Bloomington as the top domestic threat. The Earth Liberation Front, an environmental activist group which uses techniques such as property damage and arson to fortify their environmental interests, was identified by the FBI's top domestic terrorism officer as the largest and most active terrorist organization within the U.S.

'Fiddler' tradition comes to Auditorium

The National Equity tour of "Fiddler on the Roof" will open at the IU Auditorium tonight and will play through Thursday. "Fiddler," which takes place in Anatevka, Russia in 1904 tells the story of a dairyman Tevye and his five daughters. The story is about the family trying to marry off the oldest daughter, Tzietel, and the journey to find her a proper mate. At that time in history, women's husbands were chosen for them. In this case Tzietel does not want to marry her arranged mate, Lazar Wolf, the butcher, and finds that she loves Motel, the poor tailor.

Steel aims to increase communication

Junior Jeff Wuslich, the Steel ticket candidate for student body president, is back in action on campus, campaigning to further his leadership experience in the IU Student Association. "I just know I want to help people," Wuslich said.

Hoosiers split weekend matches, end streak

The IU water polo team started off its weekend by running its win streak to four games. Unfortunately, the weekend turned bad as the Hoosiers dropped their final two matches, losing by a total of two goals.

Divers hit stride for stretch run

Throughout the year, diving head coach Jeff Huber has been far more concerned with personal improvement than dual meet wins and losses, encouraging his team to stay focused on the bigger picture. Now, with IU hosting the Big Ten championship meet beginning Feb. 28, Huber is beginning to watch his words of wisdom blossom into fruition.

Clarence Young had his day in court. Friday, the junior cornerback of the IU football team was at the bench of judge Marc R. Kellams at the Monroe County Courthouse facing arraignment for sexual assault charges.

Commission proposals call for live-in advisers

IU upgrades international Web hookup

The high-speed Internet connection at IU that links scientists throughout the U.S. with those in Japan, Korea and Singapore, has just become eight times faster. This international Internet hookup, called TransPAC, makes it possible for researchers separated by thousands of miles of water to share data in real time.

Diplomat discusses cultural identity; goals for future

Speaking to a capacity crowd in the Walnut Room of the IMU, the Honorable Sorin Dumitru, Romanian Ambassador to the U.S., spoke about Romania's desire to integrate into Western Europe. The lecture, entitled "Romania's Evolving Role in the International Environment: Choices, Challenges, Changes," was sponsored by the Russian and Eastern European Institute. The lecture highlighted the goals Romania has for the future, and the ways in which to accomplish these goals.

Suspects arrested in local hold-ups

Bloomington Police have arrested a suspect associated with a Bloomington burglary and an armed robbery in Ellettsville. Joshua R. Vestal, 19, was arrested yesterday in association with an armed burglary at the Heatherwood Trailer Park, Captain Joseph Qualters of the Bloomington Police Department said. On Wednesday, Feb. 13, Vestal and Jacob D. Maddox, 20, held one male, his girlfriend and her 8-year-old daughter at gunpoint in their Bloomington residence at 3500 Heatherwood Lane. As the two suspects were inspecting the residence, the three escaped out a back window and made their way to a neighbor's house where they called the police, Qualters said.

Mom faces jury for drowning deaths

HOUSTON -- A lawyer for Andrea Yates said Monday that the Houston mother was suffering from postpartum depression and severe psychosis when she drowned her five children, "the cruelest and most severe of mental illnesses." George Parnham told the jury in opening statements that Yates' mental illness kept her from knowing right from wrong. "It takes the very nature and essence of motherhood -- to nurture, to protect and to love -- and changes the reality," he said.

Fire guts Amethyst House
