Local Red Cross accepting blood, monetary gifts

Local Red Cross branches are accepting blood and monetary donations to aid relief efforts in New York, Washington, D.C and Pennsylvania. "This region is making 80,000 units of blood available," disaster services volunteer Tom Ross said. Available units -- which will be used as necessary by the national division of the American Red Cross -- are being made from reserve supplies.

Behrman suspect charged in other case

While a man named a suspect in the Jill Behrman case was charged with the attempted abduction of an Ellettsville woman, residents of Lampkins Ridge Road received a letter pertaining to the possibility of a reckless driver seen the same day of the cyclist's disappearance. Uriah J. Clouse was charged Friday in Monroe Circuit Court with attempted criminal confinement, a felony and a misdemeanor battery count. Prosecutors allege Clouse tried to abduct an Ellettsville woman who was 18 at the time of the June 13, 2000, attempt. The woman reported a man tried to pull her into his truck in an alley behind an Ellettsville convenience store. The woman managed to break free and run away, escaping with bruises and scrapes.

Hudson's vision finally unveiled

During the last 30 years, Herman Hudson's ideas and efforts have worked as a catalyst for the character that will infuse the Theatre/Neal-Marshall Education Center. Today, he will be handed an honorary doctorate of humane letters and witness the dedication of a building inspired by his vision.

Bombing in Israel kills one, injures dozens

NETANYA, Israel -- A suicide bomber apparently wearing an army uniform detonated his explosives in a produce market in this coastal city Sunday, killing himself and an Israeli and wounding at least 28 people, Israeli officials said. The bombing came while security forces were on alert in the area of Netanya in central Israel for several hours after information was received that a suicide bomber was preparing an attack, Israel radio reported.

Chancellor must follow Wells' lead

Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of the death of longtime University chancellor and president Herman B Wells. Wells, the man who would dress up as Santa Claus at Christmastime and walk around campus, the man who hand-signed every graduate's diploma, is immortalized with a statue and a scholarship program.

A little more than 12 hours after falling short in the NCAA championship game, a tired IU men's basketball team returned to Bloomington around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday and received a warm welcome from several hundred Hoosier fans. The IU faithful welcomed the team bus back from the airport and followed the Hoosiers inside Assembly Hall, where seniors Dane Fife and Jarrad Odle addressed the gathering of fans and media.

In an up-and-down season, Davis has spent much of this year with a positive outlook. He hit a low after the loss to Southern Illinois, but he has been optimistic since.

Is anyone else tired of these so-called activists who protest all around town and campus? Take, for example, the Starbucks protesters who were out near the coffee shop two weeks ago -- a year after Starbucks was built. That place is packed almost constantly. It doesn't look like the protests are working. But do the protesters get the hint? They're still out there with signs that say "Stavebucks," chanting to shut the shop down. They don't realize they are wasting their time and have been for a year.
