An Internet company sued last week to be allowed to broadcast Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh's execution on the Internet. McVeigh is set to be executed May 16 in a Terre Haute penitentiary for the 1995, bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, Okla. That blast killed 168 people.

Rumsfeld doubts value of more force

WASHINGTON -- Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld defended his decision Tuesday not to send a large U.S. ground force to hunt down Osama bin Laden as al Qaeda fighters made a final stand in eastern Afghanistan last month.

Theater's owner can decide its fate

Kerasotes has put the old Von Lee theater, 517 Kirkwood Ave., up for sale. There is a "no movie theater" clause in the contract, meaning the purchaser may not use the building as a movie theater. The Kerasotes family purchased the theatre in 1976 from the Vonderschmidt family. Kerasotes owns both Showplace theatres in Bloomington. Because they own what was formerly the Von Lee, it is ultimately their decision on what to do with the building.

Former AD talks of future and pressures of the past

During the 2000-2001 men's basketball season, then-interim head coach Mike Davis was under the pressure to perform to the level expected from Hoosier basketball fans to maintain his job past his inaugural season. He did just that, finishing third in the Big Ten regular season, runner-up in the conference tournament and earned a number four seed in the NCAA tournament. Davis performed under pressure from his employers, fans and the media. But imagine the pressure felt from being at the helm of every sport at IU. That's what former athletics director Clarence Doninger faced for 10 years as the leader of IU sports.

Women's Frisbee heads to Nationals

The IU women's ultimate Frisbee club team, also known as "Calamity Jane," heads to Spokane, Wash. this weekend to compete against other top-16 ultimate teams in the country in the National Tournament. Calamity Jane earned its berth to the National Tournament by edging out 16 other teams to become the 2002 Great Lakes Regional Champions. The Calamity Jane team finished fourth in Regionals and beat the top-three seeds to earn its spot as one of the 16 at the National Tournament.

Perfect performance in weekend tourney

The IU softball team defeated all three of its opponents in the Indiana Invitational this weekend to give it four straight wins and move its record for the year to 9-10-1.

What else can go wrong?

If I were coaching IU football I'd give the University my two-week's notice, but that would mean I'd have to coach two more football games. Cam Cameron should go through with his. Saturday was pathetic. Utah isn't bad, but the Utes couldn't beat any of the Big Ten's other 10 teams and sure as this is Cameron's last season shouldn't beat IU. Ever.

The marketing move is probably more than a little bit influenced by Carlos Santana's placid and gigantic-selling Supernatural (see the two songs written by and performed with Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas), but this is well-worn territory for the 68-year-old singer-songwriter.

Philippine Villagers Evacuate

BOTOLAN, Philippines -- Thousands of people evacuated villages near Mount Pinatubo on Wednesday as workers prepared to breach the volcano's crater to drain its brimming lake. The crater lake rose to dangerous levels during the rainy season, which runs from May to October. Unless some water is drained, it could shatter the upper walls of the 4,740-foot volcano, geologists said. Officials have said as many as 40,000 people must evacuate. Pinatubo is one of the Philippines' 22 active volcanos.

Hollywood invades Romanian village

POTIGRAFU, Romania -- The mayor of this drought-stricken village has never seen a movie with Nicole Kidman, but he'd like to make her an honorary citizen. Mayor Gheorghe Voicu calls it "a hand from heaven for the locals" that "Cold Mountain," a big-budget movie starring Kidman and Jude Law and adapted from Charles Frazier's Civil War novel, is being filmed in the village of 1,300 people.

Students set up 'peace camp' in Dunn Meadow

In reaction to the U.S. bombings of Afghanistan, several students have set up a "peace camp" in Dunn Meadow. Beginning about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, the students descended on the meadow with tents, food, a stereo, an umbrella, candles and signs with slogans like "Stop the killing" and "War is also terrorism."
