For American families, the summer of 2003 was barely a vacation. When they heard nothing but fearful news about war and economic disparity, the only thing keeping America from slumping into an irrecoverable depression was the escape into a more favorable world: television.

Kilroy's $1.50 well drinks Monday. Fifteen cent drafts at Bluebird Wednesday. Five cent 20 ounce beers at Axis Thursday. Thanks to these cheap deals and several more like them, IU students can enjoy the Bloomington bar scene any night of the week.

State relations position to shift

After 43 years of service to IU, Director of State Relations Don Weaver is taking a three-week-long trip to Australia next month with his wife to celebrate his Sept. 30 retirement. Weaver's job was to lobby IU's interests to state legislators and other officials within the state government. He described himself as a "conduit" between public officials in Indianapolis and the University.

IU in need of upgrade

During a time of scarce funding, spending millions to improve and replace utilities on the Bloomington campus is the last thing IU wants to do. IU Physical Plant Director Hank Hewetson presented the news to the board of trustees Thursday that the University's aging heating, cooling and electrical systems will need improvements and replacements within the next five to eight years as a result of new environmental standards and capacity issues.

As IU students and their parents balance their budgets to weigh the economic and social living options in Bloomington for next year, more choices will be available. The Kirkwood, the Smallwood Plaza and Regester Place represent an economic expansion in Bloomington that is designed to attract more students through apartment living and student-oriented businesses.

HOUSTON -- A Manhattan bankruptcy judge Monday authorized the committee representing Enron Corp. employees to collect some of an estimated $53 million in accelerated deferred compensation payments set aside for certain executives on the eve of the company's bankruptcy filing, lawyers said.

Who wants an internship?

The competition is fierce this fall as students struggle to get their foot in the door at any one of the hundreds of companies that are visiting IU. Many would argue that an internship will provide you with the best method for securing your first job in corporate America. Students, not wanting to become part of the 6.1 percent of Americans without jobs, are quick to take internships with the companies that appear at IU's career days and internship fairs.

WASHINGTON -- The administration wants $100 million for an Iraqi witness protection program, $290 million to hire, train and house thousands of firefighters, $9 million to modernize the postal service, including establishment of ZIP codes.

Nightclub capitalizes on IU partying woes

When Dan Duncan entered IU as a freshman, he had big plans. "I declared a biochemistry major and was set on going to medical school after four years at IU," Duncan said. In his first year, Dan pledged and joined Delta Upsilon fraternity and began a side job as a greek party disc jockey three nights a week. Today, as the co-owner and founder of Vertigo night club, Duncan is a long way from medical school.

Contest finds 'beautiful babies'

The search for the "most beautiful baby" in the region began Sunday at College Mall. The contest, held by New Star Directory Inc., is a regional competition where winners and state runner-ups will continue on to Indianapolis for the state finals. After finals, contestants travel to Chicago for national competition. Winners in Indianapolis receive a $5,000 savings bond and the winner of nationals gets a $25,000 savings bond. Each participant in the regional competition received a trophy.

Soldier killed in Baghdad car bombing identified as Indiana native

FORT CARSON, Colo. -- A Fort Carson soldier who was killed in Iraq over the weekend when a bomb exploded near his Humvee was identified Monday as an Indiana man. Staff Sgt. Frederick L. Miller Jr., 27, of Hagerstown, Ind., was killed Saturday night outside Ramadi, about 60 miles west of Baghdad, the Defense Department said.

United Way celebrates 40th anniversary

The United Way Family Services Association is celebrating its 40th year by offering a series of free lunch talks open to residents and students. For the next three Fridays, the UWFSA will provide free speakers who will discuss and offer advice on issues such as divorce, problem solving within a family and the experience of growing up in a family with someone who was a substance-abuser or involved with other compulsive behavior.

Clancy's 'Red Rabbit' weaves tale of intrigue, mystery

Tom Clancy has taken his devoted readers across the globe with his tales of military intrigue and political sparring. In most of his fictional works, we see the world through the eyes of Tom Clancy's answer to James Bond: Jack Ryan. Clancy once again weaves a torrid tale of ego, politics and religion in "Red Rabbit," deftly trapping his hero in the middle.

'Kiss Me Kate' opens at IU Auditorium tonight

Katie Kuhlenschmidt and Derek Roland live out of their suitcases for eight months of the year. But the two cast members from the national touring production of "Kiss Me Kate," playing tonight and tomorrow at the IU Auditorium, don't mind the constantly changing hotels and the multi-hour bus treks.

Running to the top

Making its first trip back to the LaVern Gibson Championship course in Terre Haute since its 14th place finish at the 2002 NCAA Championship meet, the IU women's cross country team put its No. 18 ranking on the line. The men's team also competed Friday, taking the first five spots Friday at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet.

Tie barely avoids first Big Ten loss in 8 years

The threat of losing their first Big Ten regular season game in over eight seasons loomed large over the Hoosiers Sunday against Michigan State until freshman forward Jacob Peterson netted his first goal of the season tying the score at 1-1 with just over seven minutes remaining.
