Bad weather cancels game with IU leading

Going into the weekend, the men's soccer team had one win in its past seven matches and was looking for its first Big Ten victory against Penn State. But the IU team (2-3-3, 0-0-1) did not get its wish Friday at Armstrong Stadium.\nThe game was called after a two-hour weather delay in the middle of the second half with the Hoosiers leading 2-0. The severe weather forced the game to be called. The game was played through 66:30, just three and a half minutes short of a complete game. Officials said an effort will be made to reschedule the game but had no details on possible dates. \nThe Hoosiers, who are ranked No. 24 in the College Soccer News Poll and are not ranked in the adidas/NSCAA Poll, wasted no time getting on the board in the match. Sophomore midfielder Brian Plotkin netted a goal less than three minutes into the contest. Junior forward Ned Grabavoy led Plotkin with a pass in front of the goal just to the right side of the goalkeeper. Plotkin finished the play by poking the ball past the Penn State keeper to the lower left side of the goal. The Lions (5-3-0, 0-0-0) are ranked No. 16 in the College Soccer News Poll and have won five of their past six games.\nMeanwhile, IU lengthened its lead to 2-0 prior to halftime. Penn State junior back Anthony Calvano was called for a foul inside the box, giving the Hoosiers a penalty kick. Grabavoy's kick was belted to the upper left half of the net for a two-goal IU advantage in the 38th minute. It was Grabavoy's fifth goal of the year.\nThe Hoosiers, who have only lost once to Penn State at home in conference play, are off to their worst start since becoming a varsity program in the early 1970s. \nThe Hoosiers host Butler Thursday at 7 p.m. before going on the road for three consecutive road conference matches.
