IUAA makes alumni feel welcome for Homecoming

The IU Alumni Association will sponsor several events as part of IU's Homecoming festivities this weekend including today's annual Homecoming Parade, pre-game party and a brunch for alumni on Saturday. Each Saturday beginning two hours before any home football game, an indoor party called a "Big Red Warm-up" is held at the Virgil T. DeVault Alumni Center located on 17th Street across from Assembly Hall. The warm-up is sponsored by the IU Student Alumni Association.

Indiana, bless your heart for not giving up. A legislative proposal called P-16 Plan for Improving Student Achievement is up in the air in Indiana. It's a massive education reform that plans to link early childhood learning to one's high school career. One of its marketable tenets: It raises the minimum age at which a child can drop out of high school from 16 to 18.

Israeli special forces enter camp

RAFAH, Gaza Strip -- A large Israeli armed force rolled into the Rafah refugee camp on the Gaza-Egypt border early today on a mission to destroy tunnels used for smuggling arms, witnesses and military sources said. Witnesses said a large number of tanks and other armored vehicles entered Rafah from two directions. They were joined by special forces, including engineering units with dogs trained to uncover tunnels.

Suicide car bombing kills 10, wounds scores

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A suicide car bomber crashed a white Oldsmobile into a police station in Iraq's largest Shiite Muslim enclave Thursday, killing himself, nine others and wounding as many as 45. Earlier, gunmen -- one dressed as a Shiite cleric -- shot and killed a Spanish military attache.

Basic tools might repair space shuttles

WASHINGTON -- Repairing the space shuttle heat shield in orbit may be simpler than NASA once thought, requiring one of the most basic of home repair items -- a foam paint brush. NASA administrator Sean O'Keefe said that engineers studying ways for spacewalking astronauts to fix a hole in the panels that protect the space shuttle from re-entry heat have found that an ordinary foam paint brush could be used to spread a special compound while the craft is in orbit.

IU alum talks of NASA work

During the Cold War, science and technology were revolutionized, leading to such creations as weapons of mass destruction and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics program -- later to be known as NASA. Such progression required the skills and expertise of scientists, historians and politicians. Greats such as Werner Von Braun and Robbert Goddard gathered in the United States to transform the way the world looked at science. One such man, Joseph N. Tatarewicz, stood in Room 140 of the Student Building Tuesday before his lecture, fumbling with one of the great products of this technological age -- a projector.

2 killed in plane crash southwest of Bloomington

A small ultralight aircraft crashed in southwest Lawrence County this morning. The aircraft was found around 7:46 am behind a rural house off of State Road 54 near the Crane area, said Master Trooper Jackie Taylor of Indiana State Police.

Jefferson named Athlete of the Week

IU cross country runner sophomore Sean Jefferson was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week Wednesday for his effort in the Murray Keating Invitational. Jefferson was the first Hoosier to cross the finish line and fifth overall in an elite field which included No. 1 ranked Stanford.

Senior 'Brews' success on and off court

Since IU senior middle blocker Melissa Brewer has been dissecting opponents for four years on the court, it is only fitting that after her volleyball career concludes she'll be doing much of the same in medical school. "I always come up to 'em," Bryant said, "and first thing I say is 'Hey man, why aren't you looking at me. You scared? What are you, tired? You tired? I'm telling you, I'm going to make a play. It's going to be on ESPN -- Dee da dee, dee da dee (ESPN theme).' I'm from Florida. I'm from the same area as Deion (Sanders), Jevon (Kearse) and Edgerrin (James). That's just how we do it down South."

Famed conductor to come to IU

Sergiu Comissiona, a world-renowned conductor, will lead an IU School of Music orchestra at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Musical Arts Center. Thomas Wieligman, coordinator of instrumental ensembles at the Music School, said that very few schools in the country can call on someone like Comissiona, who has worked with some of the best orchestras in numerous countries.

Creative writing students share poetry, fiction works
