Kirkwood Av. life

·

The six blocks of Kirkwood Avenue between Bloomington's historic courthouse and the Indiana University campus form a vital link between campus and community. Bars, restaurants, theaters, churches and locally-owned businesses line the street and provide popular meeting places for students and Bloomington residents. From backpack-laden students who grasp cups of coffee in the morning, to packs of skateboarders, dog-walkers and vagabond musicians in the afternoon, to the stumbling, belligerent, fashion-conscious night owls, the street is a center of activity at nearly all hours of the day.

Jordan River Forum

·

No laughing matter I really enjoyed listening to the people laughing at the suicide attempt outside Ballantine Hall last Monday. Stellar performance guys, I'm sure everybody was entertained.

Colts hope draft solidified team

INDIANAPOLIS -- Forget major changes. Bill Polian and Tony Dungy figured all the Indianapolis Colts needed for a Super Bowl run was a little fine-tuning. Just add some more speed, a little depth and a new infusion of young talent.

Pardon my French

·

I love french fries, but I despise the French. I crave french toast, but can't stand the French. I hanker for french dressing, but again spurn the French. So how can I demonstrate my true feelings for a country without abandoning my favorite French- name products?

Mulhall eyes Derby victory

·

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Kristin Mulhall acts as if the Kentucky Derby is just another race. She isn't fooling anyone. The 21-year-old Californian really is cool and calm about having a legitimate chance at becoming the first female trainer to win the Derby. She will saddle Imperialism against such veterans as Bob Baffert, Bobby Frankel and Nick Zito.

Get it together

·

This year I have watched more sports than in the last 19 years of my life combined. Hanging out with guys as much as I have, I learned to revolve my life around the sport of the season -- Monday Night Football, Baseball Tonight and the NBA playoffs have all taken up a considerable amount of my time.

The End is Nigh!

·

As you read this column, I am taking shelter in a hidden bunker deep beneath the surface of Bloomington. It took most of my last six paychecks and all the limits on my credit cards, but it's worth every penny -- steel-reinforced, hermetically sealed doors; six-foot thick concrete walls with a layer of X-ray proof lead, independent generator, water and air supply, remote satellite link-up, and enough ammo, toilet paper, Spam and "Girls Gone Wild" videos to last me for the next 30 years.

Where were you?

·

Where were you? It has been four years in Bloomington, and we all have lots of memories to share. Some we share with everyone, some we share with our close friends, and some we just keep for ourselves.

Museum exhibit highlights changes in housekeeping

·

An antique electric washer comes with a hand-cranked wringer for squeezing the last drop of water out of wet clothes. The iron is gasoline powered. Clothes dry on lines outside and even freeze in the winter. Such sights were commonplace during the Great Depression and World War II, but today these items can only be found in dusty basement corners and on display in museums.
