Barbecuing in Hamburg

Ahhh, the joys of summer. Sun, pools, short shorts (not on me), warm nights, excessive lounging and, of course, barbecue -- that pit of fire and smoke that has sustained people around the world for thousands of years. The historical and social importance of the barbecue may be too long and boring to divulge in this article, but I have come to put another argument to rest.

Chamber Music Series attracts world-class musicians

International musicians will visit Bloomington in the Chamber Music Series this summer as part of IU's School of Music Summer Music Festival. The music series began June 25 and will run until July 21. Jerzy Kaplanek, an associate professor who teaches violin and chamber music at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Canada, will perform at the Summer Music Festival for the fifth time.

Taliban fighters try to disrupt elections

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- Taliban fighters killed up to 16 men after learning they had registered for Afghanistan's U.S.-backed national elections, the deadliest attack yet in a campaign aimed at sabotaging the nation's first free vote, officials said Sunday. The assault raised security fears and added to doubts over whether Afghanistan is ready to hold elections as planned in September -- and increased pressure on NATO leaders meeting Monday in Turkey to deploy more peacekeepers here.

Exemption denied

Last week the Bush administration suffered a defeat in its battle against international law. James Cunningham, the deputy U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, recently announced that the White House would be withdrawing its resolution to extend American immunity from the International Criminal Court for a third year after failing to secure the minimum nine votes necessary to pass.

Bleeping the veep

Vice President Dick Cheney was upset last week by Sen. Patrick Leahy's (D-Vt.) criticism of military contracts awarded to Cheney's former company, Halliburton. Cheney reportedly hurled the "F-word" at Leahy during a conversation on the Senate floor in Washington last Tuesday.

Screening the new staff

The Indiana legislature has enacted a much needed new law requiring IU to complete broader background checks on all new staff and hourly employees beginning July 1. The policy will require verification on educational credentials, prior employment, license credentials, criminal history and sex and violent offenders registry.

Former student to direct state relations

Former IU vice president of government relations and public affairs J Thomas Forbes was recently hired as IU's executive director of state relations. For the last four years, Forbes has served as assistant vice president for university relations at Michigan State. From 1997 through 2001 Forbes worked as assistant vice president for public affairs and government relations at IU, and was a special assistant to the president and coordinator of federal relations for two more years.

Students distracted by construction

Within the cordoned fence that rings the construction site of Simon Hall near Third Street, construction workers can be seen and heard excavating in preparation for laying the foundation for the new building. In nearby classrooms, instructors and students have expressed concern at the level of noise eminating from the site. Yamina Mermer, an Arabic language instructor, teaches a class on the first floor of Ballantine Hall, which is adjacent to the construction site.

Not just for fun

The parking lot west of Memorial Stadium, usually vacant in the summer months, has been transformed into a colorful array of sights, sounds and tastes this week. The 46th annual Fun Frolic has come to Bloomington. IU students and Bloomington residents have been enjoying the festival since Friday. Traditional carnival activities are offered, including rides, games and food.
