As if incoming freshman aren’t bombarded with enough “advice,” I’ve decided throw my own suggestions into the mix. Not that my advice is better than or even just as good as the advice you’ve heard before. It’s just what worked for me.

As news networks have told you by now, heiress and idiot Paris Hilton is going to the clink for driving with a suspended license after having previously been arrested for driving under the influence. While few in the tabloid media consider Paris’ penance unwarranted, Nancy Grace and her ratings-starved ilk raise an important question outside of the Hilton context: Is the punishment for drunk driving fair? The punishment is just as fair as victimizing people who fall asleep at the wheel, or rear-end another car while looking at a navigation screen or do anything to increase their chances of being in an accident. That is to say, it’s not fair at all.

Gripped with Fear

Slightly over a month ago, the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings started a ripple through the nation that has led to increased fear about such isolated atrocities and intense discussion about reforms that might protect against them. The 33 left dead by the actions of Cho Seung Hui put the nation in a state of horror and wonder.

Regardless of what they might say, with very few exceptions, everybody wants superpowers. I can remember watching “The Secret World of Alex Mack” on Nickelodeon back in my blissful preteen years and thinking how cool it would be to be able to melt myself into a puddle of silver goo and travel around the hallways of my middle school.

Un-intelligent decision

Hardly anyone will dispute the fact that University professors can be strongly opinionated. Guillermo Gonzalez, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Iowa State University, is among them. Gonzalez, who was recently denied tenure by a university review committee, has been one of intelligent design’s most vocal supporters.

Red Cross of Bloomington needs donors

The American Red Cross of Bloomington, 1600 W. Third St., will be holding a blood drive Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at College Mall, 2894 E. Third St. The blood drive was originally supposed to be held at the Army Reserve Center, 520 S. Woodscrest Dr. on May 19. Tammy Myers, a representative at the Army Reserve Center, said they are trying to schedule another blood drive for their center.

SOUTH BEND – More than 20,000 people were still without power Wednesday morning as northern Indiana recovered from powerful thunderstorms that killed one man and damaged several buildings including the University of Notre Dame’s Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

A man reported to the BPD he was scammed on eBay.com. The man found a 2005 Toyota Tacoma for $9,000 on the eBay Web site, BPD Det. Sergeant Jeff Canada said, reading from a police report.
