Student promoting mental health

·

As a high school student, junior Meredith Canada experienced the lack of understanding surrounding depression firsthand when many friends and family members failed to comprehend the severity of her affliction.

Living statues come alive at market

·

Saturday, Sept. 25 marked the third year for Francesca Sobrer's "Living Statues" at the Bloomington Farmers Market. The Bloomington High School North drama teacher incorporates the European concept into her curriculum as a fundraiser for her theater program. "I lived in Spain and was taken by all of the statues in Europe," Sobrer said. "I decided that the concept of living statues would be perfect for my class."

Around The World

·

Van pulls in front of truck in fog; woman killed ATWOOD, Ind. -- A van carrying 15 people collided with a tractor-trailer in heavy fog Thursday, killing one passenger and injuring seven others. Irena Soto, age and address unknown, was pronounced dead at Kosciusko Community Hospital from injuries suffered in the crash, Sheriff C. Aaron Rovenstine said. She was a passenger in a van driven by Antonio Rivera Torres of Madison, Wis., who was not injured.

Butler campus grieves loss of officer

Butler students console a grieving peer at a memorial service held in Indianapolis for James Davis, the Butler University Police officer and IU alumnus who was killed in a Sept. 24 shooting.

Red, blue, a little green, too

·

I have a confession to make that might surprise some of you. It has taken a lot of courage to admit, but here goes: I am a flip-flopper. That's right. I have constantly been going back and forth in my mind over my opinions on several issues. And subsequently, I have been unsure about who will get my vote in November.

The Indiana Daily Student

Crime against democracy

·

As a Californian, I look at the Bush administration offering aid money to the states recently hit by hurricanes, and I can't help but feel a little bitter.

The Indiana Daily Student

The gun façade

·

When the federal assault weapons ban expired Sept. 13, I had the same reaction as 80 percent of Americans who don't own weapons and don't understand guns.

The Indiana Daily Student

No voting for grades

·

Merrill Skaggs, a professor of American literature at Drew University, found herself in a bit of hot water recently over voter registration. Skaggs planned to make voting a class requirement. She came up with the idea after learning that only about one-third of college-aged students vote.

The Indiana Daily Student

The dollar and the documentarian

·

I think it's safe to say that nowadays in America Michael Moore is a household name. From the early years of investigating questionable corporate behaviors, to the standing up for the little man era that was "The Awful Truth," and even an Academy Award-winning film on our nation's gun control policies, it was only a matter of time until Michael Moore found a truly opportunistic moment to lash out at the current presidency.

Ruining my life, anytime I want

·

On-Demand television will ruin my life. For those of you who are unfamiliar with On-Demand TV, it is a service provided by digital cable that allows one to watch TV shows and movies anytime one wants. Not only that, but it can be paused, rewound and so forth. Typically, the On-Demand service is attached to premium channels' packages, in my case HBO and Starz.

Love these DVDs, you will

·

"Star Wars" is finally here on DVD, and, frankly, if you don't know the plots of these movies, you must have been stuck under a rock on Tatooine for the last 27 years.

The Indiana Daily Student

Short skirts, shorter tempers

·

In "Mean Girls," Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) starts attending Evanston Township High School, her first public school as a junior after spending the first 16 years of her life being home-schooled in Africa.

The Indiana Daily Student

'This type of thinking' makes for good music

·

Chevelle is back with its second major record label release, This Type of Thinking Could Do Us In. It seems that this time around, Chevelle's type of thinking hasn't really changed all that much, and that's a good thing.

The Indiana Daily Student

Harper shines a 'light'

·

Ben Harper is one of those beautiful 20th century musicians who throughout his career has been walking hand-in-hand with his influences -- it's always a battle to find the right proportions of Kravitz, Dylan, Motown or anyone else in the rhythms.

The Indiana Daily Student

Costello delivers bipolar ride

·

With the inevitability of maturity, Elvis Costello has morphed from the quirky, pigeon-toed nerd of punk on My Aim Is True into its seasoned grandfather.

The Indiana Daily Student

Boys of Green Day grow up

·

From lip-biting masturbation and adolescent drug use, to a critical look at sociological and political issues, Green Day's lyrics have obviously evolved over the past decade, along with its style, sound, attitude and personality.

The Indiana Daily Student

'Dance' if you got the time

·

A midlife crisis usually consists of learning to dance, right? OK, that might not be so common. What is common though is for a midlife male to have an attraction to a younger female, or so pop culture says. This 2004 adaptation of "Shall We Dance?" has a very 1930s feel to it with a new twist.

The Indiana Daily Student

Veto this lame knockoff film

·

If you are looking for a cookie-cutter version of Mandy Moore's flick "Chasing Liberty," then "First Daughter" starring Katie Holmes is the right film for you.

The Indiana Daily Student

Movie will soon be 'forgotten'

·

Start with a very interesting and eerie hook: A mother who mourns the death of her 9-year-old son finds out that he didn't really die in a plane crash over a year ago; he never even existed.
