Bow Wow on skates -- a major mistake

In "Roll Bounce," Bow Wow, who -- seriously -- is no longer called "lil'," plays X. X lives in an unrecognizable south Chicago with his widowed father (Chi McBride), and spends all of his free time at the local skating rink with his friends. When their hangout closes its doors, they take the bus uptown to Sweetwater, a newer rink with an arcade, tons of chicks in hot pants and at least half a dozen disco balls. They skate. A lot. Which is good, because it's the best thing this movie has going for it.

To say that Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" is nothing more than a follow up to his cult classic "The Nightmare Before Christmas" would be unfair. While both films were created using stop-motion technology (claymation for most people), feature macabre characters, themes and songs and are laced with tons of Burton's signature touches, "Corpse Bride" is ultimately a unique love story that stands on its own quite well.

Students file complaints with IUPD

At least four people have filed formal complaints with the IU Police Department over an early morning incident last Sunday when police drew their guns on a group of students outside of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, said IUPD Lt. Jerry Minger.

Health Center deals with meningitis prevention

The freshman who was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis over the weekend is still in critical condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, hospital officials confirmed Tuesday evening. In the lounge on the first floor of Briscoe-Shoemaker Monday night, Dr. Rob Hongen, medical director of the IU Health Center, led an informational meeting to educate students who were worried about the disease after it was contracted by IU freshman Ashley Lee.

IUSA passes 2005-06 budget

IU Student Association congress voted to pass the proposed 2005-06 budget in a meeting held Tuesday, following a mass e-mail attempt by an IU student to prevent the budget's passage. After a lengthy debate, the budget passed with a vote of 33-3, with three representatives abstaining from the vote.

Man sentenced for child porn on CFS

Bloomington resident Stephen D. Grimsley was sentenced to 27 months imprisonment yesterday after pleading guilty to possessing child pornography, according to a press release.

Herbert outlines IU initiatives for year

IU jazz supports Katrina victims

A dream came true. Money was raised for Hurricane Katrina refugees and a jazz great displayed his pupils' talents in an all-star cast Monday night at "A Benefit for New Orleans: The Cradle of Jazz." The concert was not only a big hit with attendees, but it was a wonderful display of compassion and a tribute to a city in need by a world-class music institution.

The 'Essence' of dance team marks 10th birthday this year

IU student Arbara Rogers knows how to keep a 10-year-old group strong and vibrant. For her and the IU Essence dance team, she said it's a mixture of fun, friendship and hard work. Members of the award-winning team will celebrate the club's 10th birthday this year with a season packed with performances. Rogers, an IU sophomore and Essence team co-captain, said the formula for the 10-year run of success is simple.

Spoiled oil: my solution

I think gas prices are still too low. But wait and listen to my argument before you go off on a wild rant suggesting all kinds of improper stuff about me. I generally agree with you that it's a lot of money to fill up a tank of gas and it is annoying beyond compare. But I've moved on from that thought to something more radical and far-sighted.

When to name names

There is at least one story per semester where no matter what decision is made, neither is the perfect option. When weighing the decision whether to print Ashley Lee's name in Tuesday's article "IU freshman contracts bacterial meningitis," many staff members expressed concerns and beliefs about what the right decision was. Is a public safety alert a sufficient reason to print the name of a private person, and is printing that name an invasion of privacy?

Bacterial meningitis survivor tells his story

He was read his last rites by his priest and given a 30 percent chance to live but survived to tell others about his triumph over meningococcal meningitis. Despite the odds against him, Ryan Pike survived the same illness that currently has Ashley Lee in critical condition at an Indianapolis hospital.

Judge sets bail for suspects in Lake Griffy stabbing incident

Ignored victims

During the hurricane coverage of Katrina and Rita, we saw people being rescued from flooded homes and cars, but what about the victims who chose not to be rescued? These were the victims who hid from federal aid workers and TV cameras, preferring to survive on their own in the shadows of the flooded region.

If you've been living in one of our many fine local caves recently, you might not know that a pair of hurricanes ripped up much of the U.S. Gulf Coast. Hurricane Rita, and particularly Hurricane Katrina, destroyed huge swaths of property and will cost billions of dollars to clean up. Somebody has to pay to fix up the mess down South. The question is, though, who should foot the bill?

State of University ignores state of students

IU President Adam Herbert delivered his State of the University address yesterday to a primarily adult audience in the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union, and, alas, that audience included too few students. Thus, not surprisingly, Herbert's address was far removed from student issues.

Police report discovery of knives in boy's room

MUNCIE -- Police officers found about 50 knives in the bedroom of a 17-year-old boy who cut a girl's throat and hands during an attack at Muncie Central High School, a detective said.
