Students go ALL-INternet

·

You won't see him checking your ID at Kilroy's for extra cash. You won't see him working for wages at the checkout counter at Target. In fact, you might not see Roger Teska much at all. That's because the junior biology major pays his tuition by putting in long hours in front of his computer screen. Teska and others like him have a very profitable knack for online gambling. "Professional card players today can't afford not to play online because there's so much easy money," Teska said.

'Narnia' books fly off of the shelves

·

FORT WAYNE -- Retailers and librarians say they're having a hard time keeping copies of C.S. Lewis' books on their shelves as fans prepare for the opening of "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe" Dec. 9. At a Fort Wayne Barnes & Noble, customers can buy individual Narnia books, or the entire seven-book series, along with puzzles, games and books about the stories.

Chicago being slowly 'chipped away'

·

CHICAGO -- To former Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne, the elevated train tracks crisscrossing the city are more than a mode of transport. They are a reminder of a great city that has for generations looked and felt like no other place in the world. But they are an increasingly lonely reminder.

Supreme Court pediment falls apart near tourist group on steps

·

WASHINGTON -- A basketball-sized piece of marble molding fell from the facade over the entrance to the Supreme Court Monday, landing on the steps near visitors waiting to enter the building. No one was hurt. The chunk of Vermont marble was part of the dentil molding that serves as a frame for nine sculptural figures completed in 1935. The piece that fell was over the figure of Authority, near the peak of the building's pediment, and to the right of the figure of Liberty, who has the scales of justice on her lap.

Remembering Santa Wells

·

Some children dream of having their own Santa Claus, but just 10 years ago IU students didn't have to dream. IU had its own Santa Claus -- a jolly man who made believers out of those who met him. His suit still hangs in the Woodburn House on College Avenue, where he once lived. A life-size cardboard cut-out of this Santa hides in the University Archives. It was found in the attic of the Chancellor's House on 10th Street across from the Herman B Wells Library three years ago, although those who knew him do not know how or why it was made.

Black faculty support Herbert

·

In the first show of group support for IU President Adam Herbert, the Bloomington Black Faculty and Staff Council called on their colleagues to vote "no" on a resolution to review Herbert's presidency at a press conference Nov. 21. Law professor Kevin Brown said he would meet later that day with some members of what some have called the "anti-Herbert movement," in an effort to convince them to pull their support for the resolution. Brown and other participants of the meeting declined to release any details of the discussion to the media.

·

The IU volleyball team wrapped up its season with a pair of losses at the hands of the Northwestern Wildcats and the No. 14 Wisconsin Badgers this weekend, ending the season on a 10-match losing streak to finish 2-18 in Big Ten play and 9-23 on the season. The Hoosiers looked to avoid the season sweep in Friday's match against Northwestern but came up short, falling to the Wildcats 3-1 (30-25, 35-33, 23-30, 30-27).

Sheer 'Drudge'ry

·

There is probably no Web site better suited toward generating opinion column ideas than The Drudge Report (www.drudgereport.com). It isn't because of the site's analysis or writing -- there's hardly any of either. Nor is it because the site deals with the important issues of the day -- if Paris Hilton's chihuahua farts in public, you can count on finding out how loud.

·

Senior Joe Dubuque began the defense of his National Championship title Saturday with an individual title in the 125-pound division at the Mat Town Invitational in Lock Haven, Pa. Women fall to 1-3 with losses to Irish, Bowling Green

·

The IU women's basketball team fell to 1-3 for the season during Thanksgiving break -- dropping two of three games. With 13 minutes remaining in the game, IU claimed its first lead since the opening minutes of the game.

'Rent' reflections

·

To be corny, things have changed a lot since I was in high school. Back then, the only kids who admitted loving the musical "Rent" were either in the theater club or gay (and oftentimes, both). But when I went to see the movie on opening night, the theater was packed with "normal" high school kids, their parents and even one group that had been singing church songs outside. And when it was over, everyone was crying.

Outside shooting pushes IU past Florida A&M

·

The Hoosiers are looking to beat opponents on the inside this year, but they showed that wasn't a necessity in their 100-63 routing of Florida A&M Monday night at Assembly Hall. With senior forward Marco Killingsworth blanketed by a thick zone all night, IU's perimeter players responded, hitting 16 three-pointers -- one shy of the school record set against Illinois in January 2003.

Third time no lucky charm for IU in NCAA tourney

·

There will be no three-peat for the IU men's soccer team. Not only did the No. 3 Hoosiers' season end while the final seconds ticked off the scoreboard in a 2-0 loss to Notre Dame last Tuesday, so did IU's 10-game NCAA tournament winning streak.

Irish end Hoosier 3-peat hopes

·

The IU men's soccer team bowed out of the NCAA tournament with a 2-0 loss against in-state rival Notre Dame Tuesday night. "Soccer is an honest game," IU coach Mike Freitag said. "It is a cruel game at times, but an honest game. I thought tonight we played a very good opponent who worked hard. I thought my team played well, but not well enough to win."

Defining victory

·

I can't tell you what "victory" in Iraq is supposed to look like. I opposed this war when it was only a bad idea and still oppose it now that it has become a nightmarish reality. But I, like virtually all Americans, don't want to see the United States lose. However, what does that mean if I can't even define what it means for us to win?

IDS votes 'no' on resolution to review Herbert

·

In light of the Bloomington faculty vote (which ended 5 p.m. Friday) on a resolution to review Adam Herbert's performance as IU president, we thought it was high time the Indiana Daily Student take a stance on the recent hullabaloo that has dominated discussion on our campus.
