Student warns of new phishing method

As the ever-expanding age of the Internet develops further, so do the problems, such as identity theft and computer viruses, that accompany it. University Information Technology Services provides IU students with information about security to prevent identity theft over the Internet and even free anti-virus software for IU students at its Web site.

I'm being serious this time

OK, I really mean it this time. The Hoosiers can win at home versus Penn State tonight. In fact, I still can't believe they lost the first time. The Hoosiers forced 18 turnovers while only committing 13 and still lost, 71-68.

Africana Festival joins community with campus

Free dinner and entertainment isn't a hard sell, and Oyibo Afoaku knows it. The director of the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center and inspiration behind Thursday's Fourth Annual Africana Festival, Afoaku said the event has been a yearly success. She brought the idea of the Africana Festival to IU from her former job. The event started out as a way to celebrate Black History Month and has grown into a large festival attracting 600 to 700 people.

Students gather clothes for Katrina-stricken area

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, a little girl from Mississippi might have unknowingly provided the inspiration for a drive that will deliver more than 250 pounds of clothing to fellow Katrina survivors this week. During winter break, a group of 220 IU students traveled to Mississippi for a week to help clean up the devastation Katrina left behind. But when junior Christina Barniak left Mississippi, she knew she could do more. She said she was inspired in part by the young Mississippi girl, who Barniak guesses was 10 or 11 years old. The girl lost her clothing in the hurricane and Barniak said when she gave her a wrinkled and torn T-shirt adorned with Mickey Mouse, it made the girl's day. "It may be only one piece of clothing that we're giving away, but it's another change in her eyes," Barniak said she remembers thinking. "I don't want this to end when I get on the bus and go home."

Monroe County Sheriff's Department reports

A 6-year-old Templeton Elementary student ran into a passing vehicle while crossing the road to catch the school bus Tuesday morning, a police report states. According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, which received the call at 8:25 a.m., the girl was crossing Rolling Ridge Way when she ran into the side of a northbound car. The driver of the vehicle, Kirsten Paster, reported hearing a thump on the right rear passenger side of her car. When she stopped and looked behind her she saw a pedestrian lying on the roadway, the report said.

Police seek feedback for neighborhood program

Bloomington neighbors know to dial 911 when faced with emergency situations, but many might feel wary about contacting the police when their quality of life is violated within their neighborhoods. The Bloomington Police Department has scheduled a Neighborhood Watch Community Workshop for Thursday evening to unite neighbors, neighborhood representatives and members of the police department to establish community watch priorities and other goals for 2006.

Popular restaurant owner dies in fire

The owner of Bloomington restaurant Janko's Little Zagreb died in a house fire five miles west of Spencer Sunday night, according to Indiana State Police reports. Firefighters discovered John Pouch, 62, in his burning Owen County home, according to reports. Although Pouch lived alone, he is survived by two sons and a daughter from a former marriage. Scene investigators found his body near the front door, leading them to believe Pouch entered the house during the fire and was overcome by smoke.

Ireland comes alive at night

Rays of light begin to litter the streets on a damp daybreak in Dublin. The buildings are clean and fresh from the rain that whipped across the "fair city" the night before. The clouds are clearing and the sun is shining through, lighting up the spirits of the people lucky enough to enjoy this beautiful Irish morning. As is said here, "first up, best dressed," an old adage that rings true this morning. However, the truth strays from the original context. The saying carries over from harder times on the island. When a houseful of kids sharing clothes was a common thing in the country, the first up was the best dressed, for they had the biggest selection.

OK, having survived this year's Valentine's Day extortion and the demolition derby of sales bonanzas surrounding Presidents Day, it's time to get back to buying random trinkets that serve no functional purpose. Fortunately for everyone, "the grand clearinghouse of all that should not be" known as the Internet offers plenty of artful choices for desperate shoppers clamoring to find a unique gift.

Senator Frist calls to block U.A.E. port sale

WASHINGTON -- Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist called Tuesday for the Bush administration to stop a deal permitting a United Arab Emirates company to take over six major U.S. seaports, upping the ante on a fight that several congressmen, governors and mayors are waging with the White House. "The decision to finalize this deal should be put on hold until the administration conducts a more extensive review of this matter," said Frist. "If the administration cannot delay this process, I plan on introducing legislation to ensure that the deal is placed on hold until this decision gets a more thorough review." But at the Pentagon, the UAE was praised as an important strategic military partner by both Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Supreme Court turns down college media censorship case

U.S. Supreme Court members announced Tuesday they would not hear the five-year college media censorship battle Hosty v. Carter, leaving university media advisers uncertain of the future of the First Amendment issue. The case centers around a 2001 controversy when Governors State University Dean Patricia Carter told the school newspaper's printer not to publish the paper until administration had approved its content.

Former players consider Davis, IU's future

A.J. Moye said he believes Mike Davis is the master of paying attention to detail. The former Hoosier men's basketball player currently suits up for Keflavik in the Icelandic Express League. His squad finished second in the regular season and Saturday, his team lost to Grindavik 93-78 in the Icelandic Cup Final. Moye scored 20 points in the loss. He told the Indiana Daily Student in an e-mail interview Friday that he finds it unfortunate that Davis is stepping down. Click here to read Moye's full responses.

'Red Hot' music leads to complaint

At about 2 p.m. Monday, senior Bridget Meskauskas was disturbed while taking her statistics midterm on the second floor of Ballantine Hall. "All of the sudden I hear really loud music, and I could tell it was the Beatles," she said. The music she heard was coming from outside Ballantine, where Red Hot Presidential Candidate and junior Lenny Weiss was playing a keyboard and singing "happy tunes," as he said in an e-mail. Red Hot is running against Hoosier in elections for IU's student government, the IU Student Association. "It was great, it was a lot of fun," Weiss said. "We set up, I had a nice keyboard, and we sang songs for the people in the passing period, and people sat around and watched and sang along."
