Sampson sanctioned again for calls

IU men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson and staff will be punished after an internal investigation revealed the staff participated in 45 impermissible phone conversations with prospective recruits, IU Athletics Director Rick Greenspan said Sunday.

Under the lights of Spartan Stadium in front of more than 70,000 people, IU had a chance to become bowl eligible for the first time in 14 years. Though the game started off looking like an offensive shootout, it turned into a one-sided massacre.

Big event raises big bucks

Zeta Tau Alpha’s Big Man On Campus shattered its goal of raising $115,000 by more than $40,000. The event, an all-male talent competition that raises money and awareness for breast cancer, raised $157,000 and, after expenses, will contribute $129,000 to the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation.

IU splits games over weekend

Latest violations put Sampson on thin ice

At Hoosier Hysteria last Friday, IU basketball fans had a lot to feel good about. Coach Kelvin Sampson announced that freshman center Eli Holman was cleared to play this season. Junior forward DeAndre Thomas weighed in at 298 pounds, about 60 pounds less than he weighed this spring. Freshman guard Eric Gordon shined on Branch McCracken Court, looking like a natural in his IU debut. All that positive energy took a hit Sunday, however, when the IU Athletics Department announced it would punish Sampson and his coaching staff for violating the year-long sanctions imposed by the NCAA for recruiting violations that occurred while Sampson was head coach at Oklahoma. The self-imposed punishment included the loss of a 2008-09 scholarship as well as the negation of a $500,000 raise that Sampson was scheduled to get next year.

Hoosiers falls to No. 5 Michigan 1-0

After holding No. 5 Michigan scoreless through regulation Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich., the IU field hockey team dropped a disappointing 1-0 game in overtime. Seventy minutes of play produced no goals for either team, but Michigan’s Paige Laytos scored a breakaway goal nine minutes into the overtime period.

Young team says energy, passion will be trademarks

IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack never stopped smiling Friday night as members of the IU women’s basketball team danced their way into the 2007-08 season, showing off their moves as each was introduced at Hoosier Hysteria. Even Legette-Jack gave the crowd something to cheer about as she took the floor before taking the microphone and firing up the crowd, asking for fans’ support this season. “Will you stay with us?”
