CycleFit to start new fee-based session packages

The sound of spinning wheels and a voice of encouragement filled the CycleFit studio Tuesday as riders raced forward to nowhere on their stationary bikes.\nCycleFit, one of IU Recreational Sports’ group exercise classes, provides a place for students to get in a good ride in a motivated setting with a trainer leading the way. While CycleFit has always been offered free of charge in the past, IU Rec Sports will only offer the class through fee-based session packages starting Oct. 22.\nIn the past, riders wanting to reserve a bike would call in beginning at 8 a.m., and often there weren’t bikes remaining for those who called too late, said Kim Cullman, publicity assistant for IU Rec Sports and an Indiana Daily Student reporter.\n“Sometimes, like today, I forgot and now I’m waiting to see if there’s a bike,” said sophomore Katie Giesler at a CycleFit class Tuesday. \nThe new CycleFit session will last seven weeks, and participants will have a bike reserved for them on the day of their choosing. With nine sessions available in the package over the course of a week, riders can choose from a variety of morning and evening classes. The classes included in the package are 45 minutes long. \nThe cost is $21 for students and $24 for all other riders. However, free 30-minute sampler classes will still be available to students and Student Recreational Sports Center members at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 12:15 p.m. on Fridays.\nThe money from the new fees will be used to pay for new CycleFit bikes as well as the salary of the instructors, Cullman said. The new and improved bikes are equipped with technology to help riders gauge how hard they are working. The new bikes will measure cadence, power output in watts and calories burned. \nSome of the same instructors that currently teach the free lessons will continue to teach the fee-based session classes. Colleen Curry, a CycleFit coach who has worked as an instructor for seven years, said she will continue to teach her weekly Tuesday class.\nDuring her class last Tuesday, Curry kept riders focused as she encouraged them to stand as they rode and push themselves for another minute. \n“That’s the great thing about CycleFit,” Curry said to her group as she continued to pedal. “It doesn’t matter how tall you are or how fit you are; we can all do this together.” \nRegistration for classes began Oct. 8 and will continue until all classes are filled. The first of the seven-week classes will begin the week of Oct. 22. To register, contact SRSC member services at 855-7772.
