Local Speedway makes small-town racing a big deal

·

Off of Fairfax Road on the south side of town sits a quarter mile dirt track where, in the summer, local history is made each week. Over one thousand people gathered Friday at the Bloomington Speedway, where for 85 years auto racing has been center stage.  SLIDESHOW:  Bloomington Speedway

Locally owned restaurants shined at this year’s Taste of Bloomington. More than 7,300 people came to Showers Common for the event, a record turnout, the event’s co-director Talisha Coppock, said. The event showcased Bloomington restaurants, wineries, breweries and live music.

Farm flooding could cause increase in food, fuel prices

·

With prices at the pump already topping $4 a gallon and the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimating grocery prices will rise more than 5 percent this year, the flooding of much of America’s farmland will be causing those prices to soar even higher.

IU removes turf from Memorial Stadium

·

It’s almost all gone. With exception to the red IU logo at mid-field, every inch of AstroPlay turf on which the Cream and Crimson were last seen hoisting the Old Oaken Bucket has been removed from the field at Memorial Stadium in the wake of flood damage two weeks ago.

An open letter to our administration

Since the end of the spring semester, students have watched the availability of public transportation decrease steadily. First, the E Route, it was announced, would no longer run to College Mall. Then the A Route began running half as frequently. Now, the administration is promising us further route eliminations and adjustments for the fall semester.

Height issues

·

I prefer to be referred to as vertically challenged, thank you very much. It’s something I’ve dealt with all of my life. I realized my shortness at a young age when I discovered I couldn’t reach the top cabinet where my mom hid the cookies. It was devastating.

Getting oriented

·

Overwhelmed freshmen and their bewildered parents are aimlessly wandering this campus like lost sheep and, fittingly, attending meetings in mass herds. Watching this sad display of behavior makes me the opposite of nostalgic for when I was in their shoes. If there’s one piece of advice I could give to reassure these nervous mobs that they aren’t making a horrible mistake, it would be this: Your experience at orientation is no indication of what your college experience will be like.

Three cheers for $4

·

To listen to the story painted by most of the media, high gas prices are destroying our society. Most of the major dailies have invested a considerable amount of time in running tragedy pieces about the terrible choices imposed by fuel costs.

Psychedelic bands jam at Bear’s Place

·

Psychedelic music is a beast with many heads, a fact made clear by the varied acts who played June 18 at Bear’s Place. Making one last tour stop in Bloomington before heading to psych-heaven festival Terrastock, all of the acts shared a penchant for both psychedelic and folk music.

Kids raise money for flood victims on Friday

·

Although it was only 25 cents for a cup of lemonade, local children raised $92.25 in four hours to help local flood victims. But the lemonade stand run by children in the Makemson family is just one example of their charity work.
