Column: Reasons for hope on the court, in the pool

With a struggling volleyball team, a one-win Big Ten football team led by a new head coach and a men’s soccer team looking toward its 25th NCAA Tournament appearance, it has been a roller coaster fall for IU Athletics. As the leaves fall off the trees, many of IU’s fall sports are concluding their seasons, and that brings a new set of schedules for winter sports.

My family’s past is a history of separate tables. My parents are divorced, and my paternal grandparents have remarried. During breaks, I usually divide my time between these different branches of my family tree. This Thanksgiving will be no different.

SPEA class organizes musical benefit concert for Harmony School

With less than a week until Musication, the Nov. 16 showcase benefiting the Harmony School, students in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs Music Industry I class provided updates about sponsors and musical equipment for the event. The class, which largely consists of arts administration majors and musicians, is currently discussing Musication, its final project, which gives a practical application to the academic material taught in the course.

Hard Candy Hearts to showcase 'swamp rock'

Finding a niche in Bloomington’s bursting, diverse music scene can be difficult. Birch Miller doesn’t write many songs with sing-along choruses. His brain works in odd time signatures — 7/8, 8/8. His band, Hard Candy Hearts, plays loud music, the music the band members like. He describes it as “swamp rock.” His bandmate, lead guitarist Casmir Lewandowski, calls it “psycho blues.”

Suspect robs bank, remains at large

The suspect in an armed bank robbery remained at large Tuesday evening after he eluded Bloomington police during a three-hour search.

Hoosiers selected to men's soccer NCAA Tournament

Indiana grabbed the No. 16 seed for the tournament, awarding them a first-round bye into the tournament of 48. Unseeded Liberty and Old Dominion will face off Thursday to determine the Hoosiers’ second-round foe.

Report states students find college harder to afford

A recent survey administered by advocacy groups Demos and Young Invincibles for 872 people aged 18 to 34 found that three of four respondents thought college had become harder to afford in the last five years and that college loan debt had become unmanageable.
