Take time to educate yourself

·

Democrats in the U.S. Congress are like broken record players. Since Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle's Jan. 4 economic policy speech, they have taken every opportunity to blame the president and last year's tax cuts for the current recession. But the seeds of our economic problems were sown well before Bush took office. Historical and empirical evidence also confirms that tax cuts actually soften the impact and shorten the duration of periods of economic contraction. How, then, can an entire political party deny reality and thrive under a banner of higher taxes and bigger government? As one notable democratic strategist might say, "It's the electorate, stupid!"

Hoosiers take loss as chance to learn

The IU men's tennis team (2-1) lost its first road match of the spring season to Louisville (3-0) 5-2 Thursday. The Hoosiers accomplished what they wanted to but didn't get the results they expected. They won the doubles point, yet failed to claim the singles points. Senior Rahman Smiley (9-5) claimed the only IU singles victory out of six opportunities. He defeated the Cardinals' Alex Sivertsen 6-2, 7-5.

Making weight key for wrestlers

·

No matter what their size, every wrestler has at least one thing in common. All have to make their respective weight for each meet. Making their weight is sometimes a process that can take a couple of days.

Meet to measure readiness

·

The men\'s swimming and diving squads travel to Iowa City, Iowa, tomorrow to take on Big Ten foes Iowa (1-2) and Minnesota (2-0). The Golden Gophers, ranked sixth in the nation and the reigning Big Ten champions, could be the Hoosiers' toughest competition. "I think we really need to get up to swim Minnesota because we'll swim them in Big Tens and they're the powerhouse," sophomore Matt Leach said. "They're the ones that won it last year and we're looking to take as many races as we can from them."

Purdue, Iowa trying to pick up steam

·

Steve Alford isn't big on Christmas break. At least not after Iowa stumbled to four losses in five Big Ten games after returning to Iowa City. The Hawkeyes escaped with a 75-71 victory against Michigan State Tuesday and might have found some breathing room. They head to Purdue at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in search of their first back-to-back wins since early this month.

Wisconsin: overrated

·

The women's basketball team proved Thursday night that defense truly wins games. By halftime, the Hoosiers had smothered the Wisconsin Badgers enough to earn a 36-29 lead, while forcing 10 turnovers.

Illini ready for Hoosiers

·

Before this week, Bill Self had a problem. The second-year Illinois coach didn't have enough healthy players to play five-on-five. The Fighting Illini were the walking wounded. Some of them could barely walk. Now, three weeks into the Big Ten season, Self has a full cast of characters -- "enough to play four-on-four on both ends of the court," he joked earlier this week.

IU prepared for No. 9 Illini

·

The Hoosiers have been looking forward to this one. And the anticipation began long before today. Their eagerness showed when Mike Davis spoke earlier this week about not looking past Penn State. To win a third conference road game before coming home for five of it's next six games would be big for IU. At the same time, Davis admitted his team was looking forward to Saturday's 1 p.m. showdown with No. 9 Illinois at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers look at this as their chance to prove themselves.

SRSC parking spots intended for patrons, not those going to class With the New Year comes a lot of faulty promises on how people will continue to work out and remain healthy. I realize that these are good goals and do cause a lot more traffic at the Student Recreational Sports Center. But what does not make any sense is having to wait at least 20 minutes for a parking spot at 9 a.m., only to go into a gym that is nearly empty. Where are all the people that parked cars at the SRSC? They are carrying their bags from their cars and walking to class. Yes, the SRSC has E parking spots, where anyone with an E pass can park, but with any common courtesy, people should ONLY park there if they plan on going into the SRSC and not down the block. This is not a new problem. In fact, IU must have been listening to all of the prior complaints and added an addition to the parking lot, with several more E spots to park in. For some reason, this has actually worsened the problem, creating fewer parking spots for those of us who wish to workout. I find it a grave inconvenience to have to wait for a parking spot for sometimes close to half an hour when I only plan on working out for 30 minutes. I have no huge solution to offer the University, but I only ask this of the other IU students: Have some common courtesy and only park at the SRSC if you plan on working out there. Otherwise, get a bus pass. Nick MooreSenior

Steel industry needs addressed

·

Last week, Gov. Frank O'Bannon gave what was billed as a comprehensive analysis of Indiana's economic woes in his state of the state address. While the governor addressed the run of the mill recession that has hit most of Indiana, along with the rest of the country, he tragically omitted the near depression that could destroy Northwest Indiana.

Proposed apartments raise concern

·

Residents living near the corner of Seventh and Lincoln Streets will have to do more walking starting in August 2002. Construction of a four-floor apartment complex is planned and will begin, assuming approval by the Bloomington Board of Zoning Appeals. The new building would make parking at the intersection scarce.
