Illinois beats Michigan, stays in Big Ten race

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Illinois couldn't possibly answer all of its critics in one night. The Illini, however, tried. Brian Cook scored 19 points, including his team's first dozen, and No. 21 Illinois beat Michigan 68-60 Thursday night to end a three-game losing streak. The Illini (16-7, 5-5 Big Ten) won in an opponent's gym for the first time this season by overcoming a 13-point first-half deficit and another lackluster effort from Frank Williams.

IU looks to hurdle big meets at PSU

The IU men's track and field team heads into the weekend traveling to Penn State for its biggest meet of the season thus far. The two-day meet features Penn State and IU, which are both ranked in the top ten in the country. It also has several other Big Ten opponents and some of the top teams from the East. The level of competition combined with the banked turns of the Penn State track should lead to extremely fast times with several being of the NCAA qualifying caliber.

Hoosiers head to Penn State, aim high

Bring it on. The women's track and field team returns to Penn State this weekend to defend their Nitty Cup Challenge champion title. The IU track team includes five nationally-ranked athletes, including Rachelle Boone, No.1 in the 60-meter.

Team heads to coast for tournament

The women's water polo team heads to California to face San Diego State today before competing in the NoGrip Invitational over the weekend. This is the second time the Hoosiers have competed in the tournament.

Regular season crown to be decided this weekend

It can't be a coincidence that the Hoosiers (17-3-2, 5-1-2) and Miami of Ohio (12-1-2, 6-1-1) will meet in the final series of the regular season. Over the last 10 years, the Hoosiers and the RedHawks have developed one of the more intense rivalries in all of ACHA hockey. More often then not, the Hoosiers have found themselves on the losing side of the feud.

Recruiting class features depth at QB

Stare at the positions listed for the football team's 21 signees and it doesn't take long to realize that coach Gerry DiNardo wasn't lying when he said his staff recruited talent over need. Of the 21 recruits, 10 play offensive skill positions, including three who play the position requiring the fewest number of players.

Pitino rebuilding Cardinals

Rick Pitino isn't afraid to throw the word around that strikes fear in basketball fans, especially at a basketball school that expects excellence. Rebuilding. Pitino has kept that in mind as he has coached Louisville this season. After a 10-1 start, the Cardinals hit a wall after an 82-62 loss at Kentucky Dec. 29. A stretch of inconsistent play followed and Louisville will come into Assembly Hall tomorrow to take on the Hoosiers having lost five of their last seven games.

Renewing a rival

Mike Davis is blunt, candid and to-the-point. Simply put, he'd rather not play Louisville Saturday for a pair of reasons: Playing a non-conference opponent in the middle of a Big Ten title hunt might provide a distraction, and Louisville's style of play is something foreign to IU and the Big Ten.

Alliance protects forests

Wednesday nights in a small, upstairs room on College Avenue, members of the Indiana Forest Alliance brainstormed and organized toward a main goal: Stopping logging in state forests. The non-profit group, funded through a $5,000 grant from the Patagonia clothing company, has about 30 active members, said Josh Martin, coordinator of the volunteer organization. About one thousand are involved in other activities, like donations or letter-writing, Martin said.

Celebrating black history

In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson launched Negro History Week and slated the events for the second week of February. Award-winning costume designer to visit campus

Milanka Berberovic's work neglects the ordinary. An internationally recognized Yugoslavian costume designer, she creates costumes that are at once brilliant, distinct, vivid and sensual. Although her costumes are wildly modern and highly fashionable, Berberovic herself could easily be mistaken for someone's grandma. She emanates gentleness, baked goods and worldly wisdom. She has received many prestigious awards, including a Prague Quadrennial gold award -- one of only 10 awarded throughout history.

Finding the 'right' professor

We've all heard stories, both good and bad. "If you ask a question during the exam, he'll talk you through it until you get the answer!" "Her exams are so hard the class average is usually in the 40s!" I know that a great deal of my performance in any class is contingent upon my opinion of the professor. I also know that both rumors and my own first impression are often wildly inaccurate. My solution is to try to get to know as many of my professors as possible.

The destruction of rural Indiana

Sometimes I get the feeling that I'm a slow-paced guy in a fast-paced world. I can never understand why it's necessary for people to carry cell phones or why there's a movement to put a six-lane highway through some of the most beautiful land in Indiana so the drive to Southern Indiana is a few minutes shorter.

Price cuts just first step

Students campus-wide will enjoy long-awaited lower prices on their favorite grill and deli foods. The Italian eatery at the Foster-Gresham food court will also feature lower-priced items.
