US compromises with UN on Iraq inspections

UNITED NATIONS -- Facing strong opposition from dozens of nations, the United States has backed down from its demand that a new U.N. resolution must authorize military force if Baghdad fails to cooperate with weapons inspectors, diplomats told The Associated Press Thursday.

Release of sniper movie postponed because of recent DC shootings

LOS ANGELES -- With a deadly sniper terrorizing the suburbs of the nation's capital, 20th Century Fox has decided to delay the release of a thriller about people being pinned down in a phone booth by a gunman they can't see. "Phone Booth," starring Kiefer Sutherland as the shooter, was to open Nov. 15.

Disaster, divinity at Orchestra

Wednesday's orchestra concert consisted of both the best and the worst in music. This time the featured ensemble was the Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Thomas Baldner. As usual, the quality of musicianship was excellent and spirited, although during the first piece it was quite difficult to tell if the orchestra made any mistakes because the entire piece sounded like one big mistake.

Cartoon makes timely appearance

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cartoonist Larry Gonick knew he might be asking for trouble when he set out to draw a comic-strip version about the birth of Islam. He had no idea that the third volume in his "Cartoon History of the Universe" series, now in bookstores, would arrive at such a contentious time.

Ibsen's 'Doll's House' well worth the time

Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" opened last Friday night at the John Waldron Arts Center located at 122 S. Walnut Street. The show was directed by Terence Hartnett and based on the 1997 Tony Award winning pseudo-adaptation by Frank McGuiness.

'Shockwave' hits campus

This Friday and Saturday, the campus will be rocked by the sounds and sights of "Blast II: SHOCKWAVE" at the IU Auditorium. A sequel to the Tony- and Emmy-award-winning "Blast," the show consists of a compilation of music and special effects. "Finally the musicians have pushed away the chairs, thrown out the music stands and crawled out of the pit and onto the stage," said Jim Mason, the show's creator.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- For college freshmen, it used to be sink or swim. Today, many get swimming lessons -- special credit courses designed to get them used to college and to make the best of it. Colleges nationwide are paying more attention to "the first-year experience," as it has come to be called. The theory, backed by research, is that students who have a good first year will come back for more, do better academically and stay to graduate.

Law school panel discusses death penalty issues

A panel of IU School of Law professors and graduate students raised reform questions as they discussed their views on the U.S. capital punishment system Wednesday evening. The panel discussion at the IU School of Law, "Is the Death Penalty 'Broken?'" was part of the week-long series "The Death Penalty: Two Views," which included Tuesday's forum at the IU Auditorium featuring Sister Helen Prejean, controversial author of the best-selling book "Dead Man Walking."

All guts and no glory for revamped Hoosier defense

New to IU this season, women's soccer coach Mick Lyon inherited a unknown defense. Lyon said he knew changes would have to be made in order to remedy an ailing squad that ranked last in Big Ten conference play in both shutouts and goals allowed in 2001. "During preseason, and the first couple of games, I thought we would be an absolute liability at the back," Lyon said. "I knew it was going to be a personal task to put some semblance of good defense together." Fortunately for the Hoosiers, Lyon's teaching worked and IU has improved to fifth in the Big Ten in both goals allowed and shutouts.The team said they felt that during their game against Michigan State the defense finally clicked in the 1-0 shutout. It marked the team's fifth shutout of the season.

Case reopened

The case of the stolen statue "SOUL," which has been missing from the Indiana Memorial Union courtyard since April 2, was reopened Thursday after IU Police Department received two tips, IUPD Sgt. Tim Lewis said. Detective Richard Seifers is the investigator on the case, and is actively following the tips. Seifers said Wednesday he could not comment on specifics in the case until the investigation is completed. Lewis said the tips did not include locations, but a tip of someone who might know something about what happened to "SOUL."
