Road trip next hurdle

·

Coming off an upset victory over the No. 15 ranked Wisconsin Badgers last Saturday, the Hoosiers take to the road this weekend as they get ready to face the Illinois Fighting Illini and rival Purdue Boilermakers. IU (12-6, 2-4) has struggled in road games so far this season, as they have posted a 1-4 record away from Bloomington.

Trips to Iowa, Illinois to prove conference potential

·

Ever since last year's disappointment of missing the Big Ten Tournament by the slimmest of margins, the IU women's soccer team has preached the importance of getting to the post-season this year. After tonight's game in Iowa City and Sunday's game in Champaign, Ill., they might have done enough to earn a trip to East Lansing, Mich., where the Big Ten Tournament will be held in three weeks, and the Hoosiers are looking to solidify their chances of competing in it.

IU has chance to clinch top seed

·

IU has a chance to clinch the No. 1 seed of the Big Ten Tournament outright with a win or tie Sunday. But it won't be easy against a hungry Ohio State team that is coming off a 1-0 heartbreaking loss to Penn State and a 3-0 drubbing of Oakland. The Hoosiers (11-1-2, 5-0-0 in Big Ten) are riding a ten-game winning streak, but the Buckeyes (9-4-0, 2-1-0 in Big Ten) are going to try to get back on track after Penn State ended their six-game winning streak.

Carter works selflessly

·

Last week, former President Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The award, which the Nobel committee wanted to give him in 1978 (but couldn't because of a technicality), was well-deserved and is a testament to the compassionate and selfless nature of Mr. Carter.

'Work hard' needs work

Let's hope the Indiana University Student Association's Project "Work Hard" has a little more thought behind it than the failed "Vote Hard" Initiative. IUSA's next rambunctious move is a three-part plan to make educational life better for students.

Limestone brings noteriety to state

·

OOLITIC, Ind. -- Most people have never heard of the tiny Indiana towns of Oolitic, Ellettsville and Stinesville. But anyone who has visited the Empire State Building, the Pentagon or the U.S. Capitol has seen the stately gray limestone that generations of Indiana stoneworkers have painstakingly pulled from earth around these towns, and hand-crafted into the building blocks that form banks, state capitols and courthouses throughout the country.

Disaster, divinity at Orchestra

·

Wednesday's orchestra concert consisted of both the best and the worst in music. This time the featured ensemble was the Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Thomas Baldner. As usual, the quality of musicianship was excellent and spirited, although during the first piece it was quite difficult to tell if the orchestra made any mistakes because the entire piece sounded like one big mistake.

Cartoon makes timely appearance

·

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cartoonist Larry Gonick knew he might be asking for trouble when he set out to draw a comic-strip version about the birth of Islam. He had no idea that the third volume in his "Cartoon History of the Universe" series, now in bookstores, would arrive at such a contentious time.
