'Chicks With Dicks' gone wild

As a college student learning to live and work as a theatrical artist, I am always weary of play reviews. Because, after all, who decides what is good theater? Despite my appreciation for tried-and-true classic theater from the likes of Sophocles and Shakespeare, this reviewer left "Chicks With Dicks," written by Chicago playwright Trista Baldwin and directed by Bloomington Playwrights Project's Artistic Director Richard Perez, speechless.

8 suspected terrorists killed after U.S. raid

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- U.S. forces sealed off a house in the northern city of Mosul where eight suspected al-Qaida members died in a gunfight -- some by their own hand to avoid capture. A U.S. official said Sunday that efforts were under way to determine if terror leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was among the dead.

IUSTV moves to Read Center

IU Student Television is on the move. The student media station will transfer into a newly built, 2,000-square-foot studio in Read Center, where the staff hopes to have all equipment and furniture in by Thanksgiving break. "It's a big step for the organization," said senior Anthony Leong, executive director of IUSTV.

Journalism students tour Katrina ruins for stories

IU graduate student Koran Addo expected to see some "shocking things" on his class visit to the Katrina-ravaged South. He expected to see some "devastation." "But it was more shocking than I could have imagined," said Addo, who recently visited the hurricane-affected areas with his public affairs reporting class. "It was really almost too much to take in all at once."

Students decide between opening national, local bank accounts

Opening a bank account is often a personal milestone, giving people opportunities to save and manage their hard-earned money and plan for the future. In Bloomington, there are many banking choices. With local banks offering the same services as national banks, it seems as though many people are choosing local banks such as Monroe Bank and IU Credit Union, where profits and members are rising. In the past decade, Monroe Bank's market share increased from 20 to 30 percent of the Monroe County deposit market. This year their share of the market is 11 percent more than the closest competitor.

Job loyalty rises, troubles remain

INDIANAPOLIS -- Workers' job loyalty has jumped 10 percentage points in the past four years, according to new report that also hints at potential bad news for employers. Walker Information surveyed more than 2,500 workers nationwide and found that about one-third of employees -- 34 percent -- are so devoted to their job they would be willing to turn down any job offer that might come their way.

I was driving my car the other day, minding my own business, when I was reminded why people should not only be required to have a license to drive but a license to speak. While doing absolutely nothing wrong, I was startled when a man in a minivan yelled into my window, "Crazy Asian! Learn to drive!"

Barbecued blessings

Thanksgiving is approaching -- but the country doesn't seem to be in the spirit. Sure, we're all looking forward to stuffing ourselves and engaging in Mad Max-esque road rage -- but aren't we forgetting the deeper purpose? Upon establishing the official celebration in 1863, Abraham Lincoln wrote: "The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added ... (Thus) it has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People."

Faults found in new meth law

EVANSVILLE -- A newspaper and television station recently reported Indiana's new methamphetamine law, passed this spring to restrict sales of cold medicines used to make meth, can easily be circumvented. The Evansville Courier & Press and WEHT-TV's hidden-camera investigation followed a volunteer who repeatedly visited pharmacies in Evansville over a period of three days in October. The woman was able to buy 19 boxes of pseudoephedrine, which amounts to 528 pills of 30 milligram Sudafed -- enough to make the equivalent of more than two batches of meth.

Considering a proper midterm evaluation

A resolution, drafted by the IU-Bloomington faculty, might soon arrive at the doorstep of the IU board of trustees. It calls for a midterm review of IU President Adam Herbert's job performance. Right now, the board has not committed to holding such a review. But if it does, it should consider a few things first:

After 'hard week' of practice, Hoosiers ready for weekend
