Bloomington: Hella poor!

ast Thursday, we reported that Bloomington is the second-most impoverished small city in the country according to the American Community Service census -- a status that gets us hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal funding. Some might claim this money should go to needier communities, but we say "Not so fast!" True, the zero-income status of much of Bloomington's population is irrelevant because so many of us are students supported by our parents. But that doesn't mean we aren't worthy of funding!

Iraqi police brigade linked to death squads

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi authorities have taken a brigade of up to 700 policemen out of service and put members under investigation for "possible complicity" with death squads following a mass kidnapping earlier this week, the U.S. military said Wednesday.

Mosquito-borne diseases hit India

NEW DELHI -- Health officials struggled Wednesday to cope with outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases in northern and southern India that have killed at least 87 people and overwhelmed hospitals and clinics.

No Sweat! protests IU's contract with Coke

In a march Wednesday from the Indiana Memorial Union to Ballantine Hall, a group of 14 students protested IU's contract to sell Coca-Cola products. The students were members of No Sweat!, a student organization opposed to labor abuses and corporate globalization, according to the group's Web site.

Magazine prints names of women who had abortions

NEW YORK -- At a pivotal time in the abortion debate, Ms. magazine is releasing its fall issue next week with a cover story titled "We Had Abortions," accompanied by the names of thousands of women nationwide who signed a petition making that declaration.

Poynter fellows to look at ethics

Eight IU professors from a diverse range of academic departments were recently named Poynter Center fellows and will be meeting throughout the year to discuss "Memory, Ethics, Politics and Aesthetics" at the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions in Bloomington.
