Appeal of video games transcends age, gender

·

When George Washington University senior Tom Lotito came home for Christmas from a semester studying abroad in Japan, he found that his mom and sister were wishing for the same Christmas present that he wanted – the newly released Nintendo Wii. For Lotito, the president of the Nintendo Players Union on campus, getting a Wii was a no-brainer, but he was taken aback by the interest of his family members.

Al Gore, the people’s president, has won a Nobel Peace Price in honor of his “efforts to spread awareness of a man-made climate change and laying the foundations for counteracting it.” Although I am very proud of Big Al and his spreading of awareness, every time I think about global warming and what Big Al tried to teach us, I think back to last winter when I played golf on Christmas Eve and can never really get that angry. And I really don’t want to write a whole column about how something so seemingly disastrous has brought me joy.

Talkin’ ‘bout my generation

·

Dear Old Conservative Columnists of the New York Times (cc: David Brooks, Thomas Friedman), Please stop all attempts to characterize my generation. I know you New York Times columnists and other influential people love to make grandiose summaries about our “era,” can’t resist coining various “–isms,” and generally devote much energy to defining the times – all while enjoying the fact that everyone will believe you, just because you’re you.

Are we equal yet?

·

My friends are some of the best people in the world. They’re a group of individuals I take great pride in, and I am constantly humbled by their respective talents, open-mindedness and passion. From Bloomington to San Francisco, lovely individuals host events such as Eroticon, part fetish-ball, part education. All in all, I’m lucky. So lucky, in fact, that if I wanted to, I could retreat into the safety of these utopian situations and deny that a world exists that is not so enlightened and accepting.

Bibles and bullets

·

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. – There are plenty of activities to do on a sunny Saturday in Bloomington. Among these are a day at the golf course and streaking through the quad with Will Ferrell. That’s why sitting at a colonial-era battle reenactment in West Lafayette seems wholly unnecessary.

You got served

The Department of Education has announced that it will begin toughening its enforcement of a federal work-study law. The law requires colleges to award at least 7 percent of their federal work-study funds to students involved in community service. Beginning in the 2007-08 award year that began this month, colleges who fail to meet the 7 percent requirement “will be required to return FWS federal funds in an amount that represents the difference between the amount that the institution should have spent for community service and the amount that it actually spent.”

·

Under the lights of Spartan Stadium in front of more than 70,000 people, IU had a chance to become bowl eligible for the first time in 14 years. Though the game started off looking like an offensive shootout, it turned into a one-sided massacre.

Big event raises big bucks

Zeta Tau Alpha’s Big Man On Campus shattered its goal of raising $115,000 by more than $40,000. The event, an all-male talent competition that raises money and awareness for breast cancer, raised $157,000 and, after expenses, will contribute $129,000 to the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation.

Latest violations put Sampson on thin ice

·

At Hoosier Hysteria last Friday, IU basketball fans had a lot to feel good about. Coach Kelvin Sampson announced that freshman center Eli Holman was cleared to play this season. Junior forward DeAndre Thomas weighed in at 298 pounds, about 60 pounds less than he weighed this spring. Freshman guard Eric Gordon shined on Branch McCracken Court, looking like a natural in his IU debut. All that positive energy took a hit Sunday, however, when the IU Athletics Department announced it would punish Sampson and his coaching staff for violating the year-long sanctions imposed by the NCAA for recruiting violations that occurred while Sampson was head coach at Oklahoma. The self-imposed punishment included the loss of a 2008-09 scholarship as well as the negation of a $500,000 raise that Sampson was scheduled to get next year.

·

After holding No. 5 Michigan scoreless through regulation Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich., the IU field hockey team dropped a disappointing 1-0 game in overtime. Seventy minutes of play produced no goals for either team, but Michigan’s Paige Laytos scored a breakaway goal nine minutes into the overtime period.
