Gov. Daniels to meet with Obama at governors’ meeting

Gov. Mitch Daniels and other state chief executives will meet with President Barack Obama during the National Governors Association’s winter meeting in Washington, D.C. Daniels’ office says he will attend a governors-only meeting with Obama and members of his Cabinet at the White House on Monday morning.

Marine from Columbus, Ind., dies in Afghanistan

The military says a Marine from Indiana has died while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced Saturday that 27-year-old Sgt. Jeremy R. McQueary of Columbus, Ind., died Thursday in Helmand province.

Goshen college lifts 116-year ban on national anthem

GOSHEN, Ind. — For more than a century, there was no playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Goshen College — a small Christian college with ties to the Mennonite Church. That’s about to change. For the first time in the school’s history, Goshen College will play an instrumental version of the national anthem before many campus sporting events.

Online drive seeks to draft Mellencamp for Bayh's seat

An online effort to draft Hoosier rocker John Mellencamp to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Indiana’s Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh is building up steam. Twitter is abuzz with the rumor and three separate Facebook groups have been set up, with the largest boasting about 2,000 members.

'Twilight' act wins 1st in IU Sing Division B

Kappa Kappa Gamma and Theta Chi took first place for their five-minute skit, "Twilight" at IU Sing in the Friday Division B competition. Their skit featured a dance-off between "Edward" and "Jacob" in an attempt to win the affection of the new girl in town.

IU takes 7-game slide to Minnesota

The Hoosier team that squeaked by the Gophers a month ago will not be the one traveling to Minneapolis this weekend. Back in January, the Hoosiers had gone through a three-game winning streak — two of those on the road — before the Gophers came to town. And it had been about two and a half weeks since IU beat Michigan on New Year’s Eve in the Big Ten opener.

Huge crates that have been sitting in the lower level of the Indiana Memorial Union are scheduled to be opened Friday, revealing a part of history many students might not be aware of. The Holocaust Memorial Museum traveling exhibit from Washington, D.C., “Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals, 1933-1945,” will be on display in the IMU until April 25.

Little 5 rookie week ends without a tire on track

Scheduled to begin this past Monday, the on-track rookie week activities are postponed indefinitely. With snow showers in the forecast for the weekend, Little 500 race director Pam Loebig said the on-track activities could be limited next week as well. Rookie week gives new riders an opportunity to hone racing skills, including bike exchanges and pack riding, before the veteran riders begin practice.

Delta Zeta sorority to compete without its partner fraternity

Sororities and fraternities have been paired for months, skits have been written since October and practice has occurred several hours a week since mid-January. But three weeks ago, Delta Zeta sorority lost its partner because the fraternity is on probation.

IU to play in Pink Zone on Sunday

Instead, the normally cream- and crimson-clad IU squad will don the lighter color to celebrate the Hoosiers’ annual Pink Zone game. This game offers the players a chance to take on a much fiercer opponent: breast cancer.

The IU baseball team will be tested quickly on how well it has restocked and reloaded for the 2010 season Friday. The Hoosiers open play a long way from home with a four-game series at the University of San Diego. The schedule has the Hoosiers playing one game Friday, a doubleheader Saturday and closing out the series with a single game on Sunday, all at USD’s Cunningham Stadium.
