Leno gets makeover from gay stylists

NEW YORK -- "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" is turning its gaze toward Jay Leno. The host of NBC's "The Tonight Show" will undergo a makeover at the hands of the "Fab 5" -- the five gay stylists who give a straight man a new look each week on the hit reality show. They're scheduled to appear on Leno's late-night talk show Aug. 14 -- the same night NBC will re-air the second installment of the Bravo series. Then they'll come back the next night to show off the results of their work.

Those fears should be easing soon as Iraq's new police slowly retake the streets.

SYDNEY, Australia -- An Anglican leader warned Wednesday that Asia's bishops might consider cutting ties with the U.S. Episcopalian Church over its appointment of its first openly gay bishop.

Cable movie channel brings AMC into mainstream

LOS ANGELES -- Given television's gay boomlet, filmmaker Jeremy Simmons' concerns about his new documentary, "The AMC Project: Gay Hollywood," appear misplaced. "With a name like 'Gay Hollywood,' maybe not everyone will tune in," Simmons said. "Which is kind of unfortunate, because I think it appeals to much more than gay people."

World War II era bombers departed the Monroe County Airport Tuesday a day before Japan and the United States marked the 58th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. The B-17 Flying Fortress, famous for its bombing campaigns in Germany during World War II and the film "Memphis Belle," and the B-24J Liberator, the most widely used World War II American aircraft and the only one of its kind still operating, could be seen up close and boarded by the public for an $8 fee.

Israel releases Palestinian prisoners

JERUSALEM -- Israel freed the first of several hundred Palestinians slated for release Wednesday, transporting the prisoners to relatives who greeted them with waving flags and chants of "Welcome" and "God is Great." A Palestinian taxi carried some of the men from Israel's Erez checkpoint into the Gaza Strip, where they emerged and kissed the ground. Minutes later, several more prisoners were freed at Beitunya junction near Ramallah, and several busloads of detainees also arrived at Tarqumiya checkpoint in the southern West Bank.

World War II bombers fly into Monroe County

Monroe County residents will have the unique opportunity today and Tuesday to view, up close, two types of airplanes used during World War II. A B-17 Flying Fortress and a B-24 Liberator flew into Monroe County Airport on Sunday. The planes were greeted by a large crowd of people trying to get a glimpse of history. The two planes are part of the Wings of Freedom Tour sponsored by the Collings Foundation.

Randy Heisler named director of track and field After the retirement of men's coach Marshall Goss earlier this summer, there was a hole in the Indiana track and field program's lineup. Now, that hole has been filled by women's track and field coach Randy Heisler. Heisler will take the coaching helm for the men's and women's programs in a collaborative coaching program.

Sorenstam completes career slam

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England - Annika Sorenstam completed a career Grand Slam at the Women's British Open on Sunday, beating Se Ri Pak by a stroke in a thrilling head-to-head showdown. It's the second major title of 2003 for the Swede, who in May became the first woman in 58 years to play on the PGA Tour.

CLERMONT, Ind. -- For nearly 180 laps, Brian Vickers was pecking at Shane Hmiel's bumper, never gaining enough momentum to take the lead for good. Then Vickers knew he had to make a move. "I realized, hey, it's time to go," he said.

IU president Adam Herbert's first day on the job started out with a nice, peaceful stroll through campus with executive assistant to the president Sara McNabb. Well, with her and about 15 others from the media including reporters, TV cameramen and photographers who occasionally would dash up close for a shot.

Harvick wins Brickyard 400

INDIANAPOLIS - The biggest problem Kevin Harvick had all day at the Brickyard 400 was when his right rear tire blew and the fender flew off while he spun victory doughnuts. The big celebration was well-deserved. Harvick turned a tight race into a runaway Sunday, pulling away in the last 10 laps for the biggest win of his budding NASCAR career.

Pell Grant funding cut nationwide

Beginning in the fall of 2004, many college students across the country will face a bleak reality. If they are among nearly half of all college students who receive financial aid, they might have to dig a bit deeper into their pockets. The Department of Education recently revised their financial aid formula, which will reduce the amount of aid awarded by $270 million.

Graduate student Erin Haag has just become one of the most powerful people at IU. Haag, a 25-year-old studying molecular biology and biochemistry at IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis, is the latest addition to the IU board of trustees. Gov. Frank O'Bannon appointed her last week.

Militants agree on deal to end standoff at Arafat compound; talks continue on moving them

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Palestinian officials said Sunday they had resolved a dispute over 17 militants held at gunpoint in Yasser Arafat's compound and that the men would not be transferred to the West Bank town of Jericho, as desired by Israel. An Israeli minister had said movement of the men to Palestinian Authority supervision in Jericho could help Israel to decide to lift a siege of Arafat and pull out of the West Bank town of Ramallah, the Palestinians' administrative headquarters Abdel Fattah Hamayel, a Palestinian minister responsible for negotiating with the militants, said "the principal issue" in the dispute had been resolved.

Al Qaeda official gives U.S. warning

KUWAIT CITY -- A new audiotape purportedly from Osama bin Laden's top deputy warns the United States that it will pay dearly if it harms detainees at Guantanamo Bay. The tape, broadcast Sunday, urges Muslims everywhere to avenge the prisoners. The Arab satellite station Al-Arabiya said the tape was from Ayman Al-Zawahri, a top official in bin Laden's al Qaeda terror network.

15-year-old charged as adult

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- A 15-year-old accused in the near-fatal shooting of an elderly man during a home-invasion robbery has been charged as an adult, meaning he could face a maximum prison sentence of 120 years if convicted. LeRoy Warren was charged as an adult in LaPorte Circuit Court with attempted murder, armed robbery and burglary. On Friday, Judge Robert Gilmore authorized the filing of adult charges.
