on the SIDELINES

·

ATLANTA - Retief Goosen defied the odds at every turn Sunday in the Tour Championship. No one makes birdie on the 481-yard 16th hole, especially not from the rough. Goosen smoked a 5-iron from 195 yards that dropped in front of the flag and stopped 3 feet away.

Knesset speaker: Disengage

·

A former deputy speaker of the Israeli Knesset urged local Jews Sunday to support an independent Palestinian state as an answer to end the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Hoosier heartache equates to headaches

·

With all the momentum on their side and only minutes left in the game, it looked as if the Hoosiers' hopes for a bowl game would remain alive -- that was until IU turned the ball over.

Women's team swims to pair of wins, loss to N'Western

·

The No. 21 IU women's swimming and diving team faced tough competition over the weekend as they took on Big Ten rival Northwestern Friday, and then welcomed the University of Kentucky and Southwest Missouri State University Saturday afternoon.

Dueling for victories

·

It was a long, strenuous weekend for the IU men's swimming and diving team. After a sweep at the hands of Texas the weekend prior, the Hoosiers knew the next couple of meets could help separate them from the pack. The No. 13 ranked Hoosiers first met the No. 14 ranked Northwestern Wildcats Friday in the team's first dual meet against a conference opponent. Both teams fought a hard battle and the meet proved as close as the two teams' rankings would suggest.

Late collapse ends bowl dreams

·

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Late in the third quarter with the Hoosiers driving downfield, senior quarterback Matt LoVecchio ran for a first down, putting IU in the red zone and in position to increase its lead. Instead of getting up, LoVecchio laid dazed and confused on the turf, the same emotions the team felt after letting another fourth quarter lead and any hopes of a bowl bid slip away in a 26-22 loss to Illinois Saturday afternoon.

'Dreaming' offers glimpse into family memories

·

Nell Weatherwax's improvisational autobiographical show "Dreaming on Your Feet" received echoing applause Friday in the Bloomington Playwrights Project's Lora Shiner Studio. Weatherwax explored memories of family through storytelling, mime and dance to create an engaging theatrical experience. On this particular night, her memories returned to themes of home and the fragility of relationships.

Looking into the crystal ball

·

Last Wednesday was, hands down, one of the saddest days in my young political life. Going into Tuesday, I figured if Americans just took a long, hard look at the policies and the record of President George W. Bush, there was no way he would be re-elected. I am not the biggest fan of Sen. John Kerry.

The defeat of elitism

·

The people have spoken. In spite of poll numbers that favored Sen. John Kerry, the election results of Tuesday dealt a devastating blow to the increasingly liberal and elitist Democratic Party and the American "left" by re-electing George W. Bush and expanding the Republican majorities in Congress.

The squirrel whisperer

·

I'll admit it. Since the close results of last Tuesday's presidential election, I've had only one thing on my mind. It eats away at me like a deadly bacteria, and I can't let it go. There's a question that I can't stop asking myself. Some say I should just move on, but I just have to bring it up. The thing is, there are a lot of fat squirrels on campus. With all that extra weight slowing them down, could I potentially catch one?

Letters to the Editor

·

Electoral college limits votes In response to one of Wednesday's articles by the IDS Editorial Board ("Keep it going" Nov. 3), I must say that you are absolutely wrong. You're missing a key point that most people look over when debating this issue: more people would vote if we abolish the Electoral College. Think about it.

Praying for daylight

·

And just like clockwork, daylight savings time is back on the Hoosier agenda. Gov.- elect Mitch Daniels is proposing a plan to put Indiana residents in a uniform time zone. Whether that uniform time zone is eastern or western, he's yet to determine.

Technology revolution sneaks on campus

·

Michael Robinson knows a thing or two about the hazards of using a chalkboard as he lectures. "I always get dirty ... and I should never wear black or dark blue," he said.

Local talent showcases jazz opera

·

What results when grand opera, jazz and musical theater meet? Something very odd and unique, no doubt. Over the course of the next two weekends at the John Waldron Arts Center, the Bloomington community will have a chance to fully experience this weird hybrid. "The Threepenny Opera," written in 1928 by the German-Jewish composer Kurt Weill with libretto by Berthold Brecht, is a full-blown jazz opera performed by the Detour Theatre Company under direction of Terence Hartnett.

Guides show visitors wonders of IU

·

The IU Art Museum doesn't have any 90-degree angles. This fact is among many others the IU Visitor Information Center tour guides share with their visitors. Besides just the location of specific buildings on campus, tour guides entertain visitors with their obscure IU trivia.

Meth laws create long lines

·

EVANSVILLE -- A proposal to help authorities crack down on the illegal methamphetamine trade by restricting access to over-the-counter medications would mean longer waits for cold medicines at Indiana's pharmacies.

Daniels vague about spending plans, budget deficit

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov.-elect Mitch Daniels and newly empowered House Republicans are eager to push their campaign proposals in the General Assembly, but they still aren't saying how they will tackle Indiana's fiscal problems or what the state's next budget will look like.

Chemical plant restrictions draw concern

·

FORT WAYNE -- Tight access to chemical companies' records imposed because of terrorism concerns has restricted the public's ability to determine which companies store large amounts of hazardous chemicals.
