Former Indiana first lady Josie Orr dies

Joan "Josie" Orr, who spent eight years as Indiana's first lady while her husband, Robert Orr, was governor, has died. She was 85. Orr died Tuesday, Alpha Funeral Services in Indianapolis said. Her husband, a Republican, was governor from 1981 until 1989, following eight years as lieutenant governor.

Search for Lake Co. suspect costs $40K

The Lake County Sheriff's Department has spent $40,000 in overtime looking for a suspect who has shattered windshields in 16 or more vehicles since July. The Lake County Council on Tuesday authorized Sheriff Rogelio Dominguez to shuffle his 2006 budget to pay the 14 officers who have patrolled the four-lane highway on overtime. No arrests have been made.

Cummins to build new diesel engine in Columbus

Cummins Inc. plans to add 600 to 800 jobs as it begins production of a new diesel-powered engine at a plant near its central Indiana headquarters, the company announced Wednesday. The new light-duty engine will be offered in standard pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles that are expected to hit the market by the end of 2010, company officials said. The diesel engine is expected to average a 30 percent fuel savings over gasoline-powered engines for comparable vehicles.

The Martha Graham Dance Company didn't have to sell out the IU Auditorium to make its audience applause ring like it had done that very thing. The New York-based dance company captivated about 1,500 attendees Tuesday night, showcasing a modern dance history that company dancer Blakeley White-McGuire said represents a part of American legacy. Martha Graham's choreography is well-known for its storytelling ability, along with the emotional expression of the dancers who play characters throughout their performances, said Anne Posluszny, company manager.

Ninety years and thousands of pairs shoes ago, a 16-year-old Italian cobbler named Salvatore Ferragamo came to Los Angeles hoping to find a little glamour. He found a little and then created a lot more. So it seems fitting that the twin worlds of fame and fortune are honoring him this month on the Rodeo Walk of Style, one of the ritziest and most high-profile shopping streets in the world.

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Convicted Washington-area sniper Lee Boyd Malvo is seeking a broad plea agreement in which he would plead guilty to other 2002 shootings that authorities have linked him to, defense attorneys and Maryland prosecutors said Tuesday.

'Hoosiers' screenwriter offers advice to IU students

Like most university lectures, Angelo Pizzo's began with a lengthy introduction with an academic lauding of the speaker's accomplishments Tuesday night. But Pizzo, the screenwriter of the beloved 1986 movie "Hoosiers," about a small-town high school basketball team's journey to the state-title game, delivered a speech that wandered far off the path of the usual academic lecture.

Big names arrive for HIV/AIDS benefit

There was nothing distinctive about the Catholic school uniform that Garlia Jones wore in the mid-90s. A speaker came to her school one day to present information on HIV/AIDS. During the next four years, Jones said she distinguished herself by wearing a red ribbon -- a pin she received that day.

IU defeats DePaul, Purdue during home tournament

The IU men's club volleyball team hosted the seventh annual Hoosier Fall Classic Oct. 7 in the HPER Wildermuth Gym. Twenty teams made the trip to Bloomington to participate in the day-long preseason event. IU welcomed teams from all over the Midwest and around the country, including Big Ten rivals Illinois and Purdue. The Illinois A squad team won the tournament.

Kevin Noschang wasn't sure. With his team tied 2-2 two minutes into overtime against instate rival IU-Purdue University Indianapolis, the sophomore forward said he knew his team would win the game, but he was uncertain whether his left-footed shot would end the battle.

Freitag's substitution decisions gave IUPUI shot at some late-game heroics

The IU men's soccer team dominated the pace of play for the first 83 minutes of Wednesday night's game against IU-Purdue University Indianapolis, taking a 2-0 lead over the Jaguars. However, with eight of the original 11 starters for the Hoosiers sitting on the sideline, IUPUI scored two goals in five minutes to send the game into overtime.
