Presidential ass-pirations

·

Warning: This column was written under the influence of cultural food – soul food, to be exact. A full belly of catfish and collard greens (and six beers) may be the source of any insight or libel to follow. Readers should interpret the author’s words accordingly. Oh, Newt Gingrich, you crazy guy. You’re so full of love. What will you do next?

A woman's place

·

How many times have we heard the old saying “A woman’s place is in the home”? I know I’ve heard it before. But the beauty of the time and society that we live in is that women are no longer restricted to being housewives and mothers alone.

Bush proposes cutting Perkins Loans for ’08 federal budget

·

President Bush proposed a new budget for 2008 that would limit the Federal Perkins Loan Program. The Bush administration proposed a restriction on the amount of money colleges can collect from students paying off Perkins Loans, while at the same time providing the federal government with the authority to demand that interest money from the loans goes directly to federal collection agencies. Congress has yet to approve this budget.

Transfer troubles

·

Has college life got you down? Are classes rough? Are you having trouble making friends? When you make any big life change – especially one that involves moving to a new place and throwing yourself into a mosh pit of 40,000 students – that can happen. So, suck it up! Stick it out and it should work itself out. And if it doesn’t, then transfer.

Helping in any way he can, Powers adjusts to role as tight end, mentor

·

Just one year ago, Blake Powers was preparing for another season as the starting quarterback for the IU football team, and Kellen Lewis was a name unknown by many Hoosier fans. Entering this year’s spring practices, the story has changed for both players. Lewis is now the starting quarterback, and Powers has switched over to play tight end for his senior season.

Online project caters to families with young children

·

Through a partnership with the Department of Health, a family information and resources section was added to the Early Childhood Center Web site. Now IU’s educators and young families can see what events and research projects are available in Bloomington.

Donation generation

·

Seldom does a month go by without a high and mighty columnist in the Indiana Daily Student chastising the IU student community on the basis of apathy. I am guilty in this regard. Apathy on campus can be a serious problem, especially when it affects student voice. But IU student apathy is not as rampant as it might have been in the past. It is, after all, much easier (and much more controversial) to point out shortcomings than it is to praise accomplishments. Today the credit is due.

IRAN PROTEST

Iranians protest outside British Embassy over captures

TEHRAN, Iran – About 200 Iranian youths threw rocks and firecrackers at the British Embassy on Sunday, as the British government said it was in direct contact with Iran over the capture of 15 British sailors and marines.

Around the world

·

Pope Benedict XVI, in his Palm Sunday Mass, opened the Roman Catholic Church’s most solemn week by urging young people to live pure, innocent lives.

Water, water everywhere

·

Environmentalists and peaceful hippies alike would have us believe that no one can own the waters, that the vast and ever-changing tides belong to the earth from whose bosom we all sprang. Therefore, we all have a right to utilize and traverse the waters of the globe without fear or restriction.

Let magazines live

·

Remember when we were little? When that weird, chubby neighborhood girl would call you during your midafternoon dose of “Doogie Howser, M.D”. and ask, “Wanna play?” “Um, no. Wanna watch the latest episode of ‘Sister, Sister’?”

‘Hip-hop Is (not) Dead’

·

Ever since Nas released the single, “Hip-Hop Is Dead,” there’s been a lot of hearsay that is attempting to validate this assertion. Several publications have pontificated the notion, but perhaps the most startling evidence is a recent video of Karl Rove dancing along to comedians rapping about “M.C. Rove” at a high-profile banquet in our nation’s capital.

Students ride ‘bullet train’ around Japan

·

While most students on campus have probably never traveled to Japan, the hundreds who attended Japan Night on Friday got a taste of the customs, cuisine and traditions of the Land of the Rising Sun without even leaving campus.
