What’s wrong with journalism

As a journalism major and an idealist, I prefer a certain level of professionalism and class in my news coverage. I like a person like Anderson Cooper, who covers important issues well and actually cares about those issues and confronts the responsible (or irresponsible) parties – see his coverage of Hurricane Katrina for an example.

No fly ninnies

Robert Johnson is on the government’s No Fly List. He was convicted of plotting to blow up a movie theater and a Hindu temple in Toronto. He served a 12-year prison sentence before he was deported to Trinidad. For the multitude of Robert Johnsons that reside in the United States and elsewhere, this means that they are now subjected to searches and interrogations – sometimes for hours – every time they decide to fly on an airplane.

Hard-knock life

Imagine this scenario: Due to unfortunate circumstances, you find yourself locked in a bare room. Everyday activities are monitored with the expressed intent of breaking you down. Your life becomes a routine, played out at the behest of those unconcerned with your well-being. You eventually lose contact with your family and friends. Such a scenario isn’t improbable – 2.2 million Americans currently lead a life similar to this in prisons around the country.

Tactless fundraising

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, tact is “a delicate and considerate perception of what is appropriate.” It’s also something administrators at Virginia Tech seem to be lacking at the moment. Perhaps they should have consulted this definition before they finalized the design of their $1 billion fundraising campaign, because from the way it’s being run, it appears that they have forgotten the meaning of the word. Barely six months after the tragic shootings that claimed the lives of 32 students and faculty and left the nation upset and confused, the university has already, whether intentionally or not, taken advantage of the outpouring of support it’s received from across the country and used it to support its own institutional goals.

Climbing to the top

Hilltop Garden and Nature Center, a little known corner of campus, is on its way to having a big makeover. Started in 1948 as an innovative “summer camp” for 7- to 11-year-olds to learn about gardening, Hilltop has failed to keep up with the times. But Greg Speichert, Hilltop’s new director, is ready to bring it up to speed, and he’s already working on ways to improve the center.

Bus driver may face lesser drunk driving charge

IU predicted to finish 9th in conference preseason polls

In a women’s basketball season that promises to be wide-open, a few things were clear at Big Ten Media Day on Sunday – a precious few things. Ohio State is the favorite to defend its Big Ten crown, Wisconsin’s Jolene Anderson is the pick for conference player of the year and after that, nothing is really clear. The Buckeyes are tabbed to win the conference in both the preseason coaches and media polls. They are followed by Wisconsin and Illinois in the coaches poll and Michigan State and Wisconsin in the media poll. IU is picked to finish ninth in both.

IU beats Northwestern on Senior Day, gets 1st conference victory

The IU field hockey team sent its six seniors out in style Sunday with a 2-1 win over Northwestern on Senior Day at the IU Field Hockey Field. “It was awesome to get the win on Senior Day today,” senior goalkeeper Haley Exner said in a statement. “We played with so much adrenaline and heart. We also played really well as a team today and I think that is what allowed us to get the win.”
