Students perform "A Strange Peace" Saturday evening at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Composed by graduate student Jonathan Sokol and choreographed by junior Utam Moses, the piece was one of fourteen original student works in the "Hammer and Nail" performance.

“Hammer and Nail,” performed this weekend at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, was not just a concert of new music written and played by musicians from the Jacobs School of Music, nor was it simply a display of virtuosic dance choreographed by students in the IU Contemporary Dance Program.

The labels that we give to people – be it pirate or savage or slut – always do some kind of work for us. By calling someone a pirate, we are able to write him off as a bad person and move on. We aren’t required to step back and think about what might have caused them to act the way that they are acting – after all, they are just pirates.

Budget relies on stimulus

The Republican-controlled Indiana Senate released its two-year state budget proposal earlier this month. The plan calls for spending $28 billion in state money over the next two years, as well as $2 billion in federal stimulus funds.

As the Passover holiday ends, the Middle East once again begins to stir with unrest and turmoil. This region is no stranger to disorder, so the sight of jets, helicopters and refueling stations at the ready is no spectacle. At ease in their environment of discord, the Israeli Defense Force is using the tension provided by Iran’s nuclear program as a launching point for an attack.

Despite broad national support for the Obama administration and its initiatives, one couldn’t help but notice last week that widespread dissent was brewing.


Juniors Jennifer Balbach and Jenna Cerone round turn four during Team Pursuit on Saturday evening at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Kappa Delta went on the final heat of the women's race and won the event over Kappa Alpha Theta.

Black Key Bulls, Kappa Delta claim Team Pursuit titles

In a 15-lap race to the finish line, Black Key Bulls led the entire way against the Cutters to take home the title of Team Pursuit Champions.Kappa Delta beat out Kappa Alpha Theta in a 12-lap battle for the victory on the women’s side.

Crimson defeats Cream

On a warm and sunny afternoon at Memorial Stadium, the Crimson defeated the Cream 28-27 in the IU football Spring Game.

Tom Crean, IU teams now on Twitter

IU men's basketball coach Tom Crean is the latest celebrity to join Twitter. A story on the IU Athletics Web site made the announcement on Friday. Fans can see what Crean's up to by following @TomCrean.

IU loses 9-7 to Penn State

Jake Dunning stepped up to bat with the bases loaded, the tying and game-winning runs represented on first and second base. Dunning wasn’t able to convert and was struck out swinging to abruptly end IU’s 9-7 loss to Penn State.

Piano concert to honor survivors

In commemoration of Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Memorial Day, the Polish Studies Center and Congregation Beth Shalom in Bloomington will play host to a Holocaust memorial concert to raise money for the Children of the Holocaust in Poland.

Palin advertised her home state's geographic features and discussed issues raised during her vice-presidential run before talking about the importance of the right-to-life movement.

The 19th annual Miss Gay IU pageant will take place at 7 p.m. Friday in the IU Auditorium. Members of OUT and Britney Taylor, the 2008 Miss Gay IU, who chose the theme “Angel Fashion Show,” organized this year’s pageant.
